<p>We should be concerned with China everywhere. We worry too much about military issues and not economic issues. China is locking up resources all over the world.</p>
<p>I was recently in East Africa - and concur - China is very much a part of the picture there, building roads, businesses, infrastructure. Meantime in the US, we are neglecting all three, and right at home, at that.</p>
<p>China is fast growing and is cash rich. US had too much problems on its home front and participated too many wars. Can’t careless for those who are in the peripherals.</p>

<p>I thought I’d ask how many of the multitudes of prospective and current IR majors are considering a regional emphasis on African Studies?</p>
<p>Chinese are heavily invested in East Africa regarding harvesting of natural resources. Diplomatically, they are quite friendly with repressive governments in that region. No surprise there. US is sitting on its hands in Africa, as has been its habit. Hard to believe that Clinton was the first US President to visit in ages. I think “W” Bush visited also, but it seem largely ceremonial, despite the whole ‘Blood Diamonds’ conflicts that were topical at that time. US seems to have little substantive impact in the strategic nations of Africa south of the Sahara.</p>
<p>I think it’s great that China is investing in Africa. Why is this a problem? And why should it be a competition?</p>
