Is the workload at UCSB heavy?

I’ve been wondering are classes at UCSB harder than AP classes in highschool, particularly the GE’s. I’m asking because I have terrible study habits, and I just want to mentally prepare myself for college.

what major

My major is Chemistry, is that a hard major? I heard Bio is harder…

Personally UCSB’s GE classes are academically not much different in terms of difficulty from AP/CC courses

If you have bad study habits then now is the time to resolve to change them! Actually your situation isn’t that uncommon; many students are smart enough to get by in HS with just some last-minute cramming and doing homework just before its due. Given their position at the top relative to their peers in HS, this is enough to do well. It’s a whole new game in college where everyone else is as smart as you. You’ll need to adapt or struggle.

There is a book I recommend all entering college students get, called “What Smart Students Know”. Written by the co-founder of the Princeton Review SAT Prep service, it talks about how to study various types of material, take notes, prepare for tests, etc. You can also find lots of info on the web on how to study; here is a link to get you started: [Academic Support Center](http://www.stthomas.edu/academicsupport/studyLinks/default.html</a>)

A lot of success comes down to plain old work and dedication; for a sample of opinion on this, see [Winning Edge](The Winning Edge | Psychology Today) You could just blow the GEs off and not really care what you learn in them, or you could consider them as practice for the classes where you really do care.

Honestly it isn’t intense at all. I’m an engineering major, and its not bad. I spend most of my time doing stuff that isn’t studying.

I have a similar question to OP, however Ill add that I only took AP and CC classes my jr and sr year in HS. I have experience with 13 page research papers and other long term projects. (and did relatively well, I got an A+, B, and a A- in all of em) How difficult would the transfer to UCSB be for me as a Biochem Major?
