Is there a community college near San Jose that is liberal?

I’m at De Anza right now, and it’s definitely not liberal. I think San Jose City College is pretty liberal. Mission College, Foothill College, West Valley College all seem to be not liberal. I’d really like to go to a liberal community college. It seem at De Anza if you’re not under the age of 23 you get frowned at.

Stanford University ;)

As a general rule, schools that are heavy on the arts and music tend to be more liberal than schools that are heavy on the sciences and engineering. Seeing how you are going into IT or business, all I can say is get used to being around more conservative-minded people.

If anyone gets on you about your age, tell them you have to do what you have to do, and you have to take these classes (list the classes) in order to transfer. By the way, I didn’t transfer from Las Positas College to UC Davis until I was 26 years old. I got a little flack for my age, but I made better grades than most, so I was usually left alone.

My experience with liberal schools are that they tend to be elitist, or they have an inferiority complex. After I transferred to UC Davis (a school that is more liberal than you’d expect) people there tried to discourage me from finding an internship, saying it was too hard. Also, whenever I griped about a low test score, people told me “Oh, it’s just hard and you should be happy you got what you did!” It’s as if getting a 3 out of 10 on a quiz in an uncurved class is applaudable! I’ve had to push back against this attitude so many times, just to maintain a 3.33 GPA at this point, and I have damaged a few friendships in the process.

Bottom line, stick with a school that pushes you in the right direction. Hopefully DeAnza is doing that, otherwise you need to get out of there. You’ll know the difference between somebody giving you a hard time with the intent to challenge you, versus somebody giving you a hard time to lower your expectations.

Sorry for my long response. Hope this helps.
