Is there a degree for that?

I NEED HELP! I know what I want to do, just not what degree to get to go with it. I want to cast/write/create music videos and commercials, and I know I want to minor in sociology. I am just not sure what I should major in to go along with my career plans, or if I should major in sociology and minor in whatever degree I should get. PLEASE HELP, ADVISE NEEDED.

Compare the majors below from NYU Tisch and Emerson College – this will give you an idea of what’s out there and what types of majors to research elsewhere (what they might be called, courses they offer, department they are in, etc.).

Juilliard accepts very few students, and almost none directly out of high school. You don’t go there to “minor in drama.” It is an intensive conservatory program. It is a little late to begin thinking about this if you are a senior. It is a perfect time if you are a freshman. You should probably look at filmmaking, direction, and production majors. The other possibility is to pursue a B.A. Most BFA programs are much to rigorous to allow flexibilities for Minors and double-majors. Not all, just most. Emerson’s Theater Studies program might be good for you. If you have the academic chops to even contemplate Yale, then you would be a very solid candidate for Emerson. What grade are you in?

“cast/write/create music videos and commercials” Film production would probably be the closest major.

Help! I am hoping to go into a career casting/directing/creating t.v. commercials and music videos. What degree do I ever get for that? I know I want to minor in drama, I currently attend a preforming arts school in MN, it really is a passion of mine, but I have NO CLUE what to do about a major! I don’t know what school to go to! I want to study in the new england area, I have been looking at Yale and Juilliard, ( I like aiming high), but I just can’t figure out the first step or where to start. I APPRECIATE ADVICE!

Film production is what I would say also. Look into Ithaca, Columbia College of Chicago, NYU (if you can afford it and want a large city school with no campus). You’ve given us no other information so those are three generic, varied possibilities.

Honestly, that sounds like the kind of career you get into through experience and connections, not on the basis of your major. I could see someone, for example, potentially majoring in sociology but interning at Sony or BMG or whatever and getting involved in the music business that way, then working their way to music videos eventually. For commercials marketing or advertising might be a good major, but the skills are going to vary across cast, write, and direct. Those three functions are often done by a bunch of different people, especially for important music videos and ad campaigns.

My first thought went to Hype Williams, who I know attended Adelphi but I’m not sure what he majored in - but his big break came when he worked at a video production company. Doug Nichol and John Lloyd Miller both went to the USC School of Cinematic Arts. In fact, finding educational information for most music video directors is pretty difficult, but a lot of them were proteges or interns for bigger directors/producers until they struck out on their own. A few went to film school. Many directed some music videos after beginning in film or documentaries.
