My children convinced my mother to begin reading Harry Potter and she is almost through with book one. My daughter suggested she keep a large post it note inside the front cover to jot down the characters so she could remember them from book to book. I was wondering if there might be a small cliff note type book, or something similar that I could buy for my mother to help her keep everything straight as she reads through the series.

Sparknotes has good character lists for each Harry Potter book individually. She should only look at the list of characters for books she’s already read, so if she’s reading the third book she should only refer to character lists from the first two books. This is for the first book: http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/harrypotter/characters.html

Sparknotes also has plot summaries by chapter and by book which may be helpful if she stops reading for a while (at the end of the book or in the middle of one). They also have more some more extensive character analysis of major characters.

Scary looking lists of everyone ever mentioned: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_characters_in_the_Harry_Potter_books

Character list with very short description of each: http://www.mugglenet.com/characterlist.shtml

Not something you can carry around (unless you have an iphone or similar), but the Harry Potter Lexicon site is where JK Rowling herself turns when she forgets details about characters.
