At our county public high schools, you cannot be failing any subject. Grades are reviewed at the end of each quarter.

Ours is “not failing” at the end of a report card period. I always thought that was a very low standard, but S1’s sophomore year he had to play freshman basketball in addition to jv, because they didn’t have enough eligible freshman basketball players.

Band and orchestra are classes for credit, so no minimum.

We are governed by our state athletic association:

High school students (grades 9-12) must be currently enrolled in a member school and have received passing grades in a minimum of five (5) one credit courses, or the equivalent, in the immediately preceding grading period.

At our school the “no failure” clause is ongoing, not just at he end of a marking period. Grades for spring sports will be “pulled” by the AD in a weed or 2 and we’re only 3 weeks in to the semester. Anyone who missed an assignement or had a bad first exam could be failing in real time even though they may be in OK shape over the longer term. I think there’s a probationary period for those who don’t qualify in the first grade check. After that they are pulled at regular mandated intervals and kids can become eligible or new kids can fall below the level. The quibble that I have had is allowing a kid who is not currently academically eligible to take a spot on the varsity roster. In my book, if the decide to carry 17 on varsity, they should be 17 players who are actually eligible to play and let the guys earn their way back when they are allowed to be on the field.

saintfan-our failing is “up to the minute” as well, but within reason. Currently D has an “F” in band, however, the band directors put the lessons into the online grade book at the start of the week and add the individual grades as the kids take the lessons, which takes a couple weeks to get through everyone. D won’t have her lesson until next week so that F will stay until then, where it will go back up to an A. The coaches know that. If you had too many missing assignments for a class though, you would have to meet with the athletic director to figure out what is going on and then a decision on eligibility would be made then, usually after talking to the teacher.

Quarterly report cards have a statement as to whether student is eligible to participate in extracurricular activities. I believe the requirements are a minimum 2.0 GPA and no F’s. Does not seem to be an overly strenuous standard.
