Is there a quota per highschool/region?

<p>Last year I think 2 people went to Cornell from my school, but that class was not very competitive, maybe 3 or 4 people had a 2300+ sat and those didn’t even apply to Cornell. However this year there are around 15+ people with that score and a lot applied to Cornell even though several (8) got into HYPSM early (only 1 got in last year). Also 1 athlete was recruited ED. If I am not on their level but decent do I even have a chance? even though I would actually go to Cornell and they wouldn’t…</p>

<p>The fact is you’ll be admitted regardless of applicants at your HS or not. If you get it, it won’t be despite them. If you get rejected, it won’t be because of them.</p>

<p>Cornell has no need to have limits/quotas of admits per HS. That would imply they felt some need to “spread the wealth” to other high schools. They don’t. They will admit/reject whom they want regardless of the school. They aren’t there to curry favor with school administrators. They’ll look out for their own needs first. They could admit all 15 of you and none for the next ten years – if the quality of the candidates dictated as much. Or they could reject all of you and accept fifteen next year – if the quality dictated as much.</p>

<p>^^ I wish what you were saying were true, but it really isn’t. Maybe it is true in the case of some random high school, but Cornell could readily admit half the class at either Andover and Exeter and have stellar admits – it just can’t give up that many places to those schools. So, on the one hand you are correct, but on the other, not so much.</p>

<p>Of course there are outlier situations like the Andover/Exeter/Choate/Sidwell, etc. factories.</p>

<p>Depends if your school is a feeder. If your school is a feeder (Let’s say, more than 8 in every year) then there kind of would be a “quota” but that’s because you already get so many kids in anyways. There is no actual quota, but schools tend to compare you with other kids of the same region - and they generally accept a similar amount of students between different years</p>
