Can you double major if there is such a thing as an honors program?

There are two major honors programs at UIUIC-- Campus honors and the James Scholars program. Campus honors is the more difficult one to get into, does not apply to any particular college, and generally enrolls only about 125 freshman per year (it admits in the 200’s to get the 125 enrollment) You need to be on the very high end of class rank and test score to get invited.

Each college (e.g., engineering, LAS, business) has its own James Scholars program; in engineering or physics you generally need a very high class rank or a 33 or higher ACT; other colleges have their own minimums required.

There are also some departmental honors programs but generally you cannot be invited to those until after freshman or sophomore year.

To learn more go to UIUC’s site and do a search for campus honors and James Scholars.

Being in or not in an honors program is unrelated to whether you do a double major. The double major rules vary among colleges and it is more difficult to double major in two different colleges than one both because of rules that might apply for cross majoring between colleges and because it is not very easy to meet the course requirements for both majors from different colleges and still have any hope of graduating in four years. For example, a typical engineering program has so many required courses throughout the four years that finding the time to fit courses in an unrelated major into your schedule can be a daunting exercise.

You mention engineering and physics which is a possible double major because they have similar math and science requirements. Also, the physics department is actually in the engineering college and thus you would be double majoring in the same college as far as determining rules for doing so even though LAS actually awards the degree in Physics.
