So, we never really thought we would be in the position we are in. We’re from California. High stats, great EC D24 got waitlisted to all the UC’s she applied to: UCLA, UCSD, UCB, UCI, UCSB. And rejected to Cal Poly SLO. Bad planning on our part #lessonlearned. She applied to UofA and was accepted with decent merit aid, making it the only realistic option financially.
But the kicker is, she didn’t submit app for Honors program because she didn’t actually think UofA was going to be an option. Now that it is one of her ONLY viable options, I am hoping somehow someway we can attempt to apply for the honors program. I really would like her to have that avenue to be around and work alongside the hard working students, as opposed to the party-hungry population.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
Have you reached out to ask if they’ll accept a post Feb 1 application?
Here’s the link for current students.
The Honors dorm is awesome - with a cafe at the bottom and gym/counseling center adjacent.
That said, some kids simply want “Honors” because they think it’s better - but they are all different and some kids like Honors at one school, but not another - so it may be your kid isn’t missing. Really have them study what Honors offers vs. thinking - U of A is a safety so I have to get Honors. And just so she knows - as I went through the job process with my son and Internship with my daughter - do Honors for you but there’s no place to enter it on the online job apps that companies use vs. resumes - so I’m not sure it’s getting you a leg up in the real world - but for the right kid, of course, it can alter the overall experience.
btw - U of A is a fantastic school with leading programs in STEM, business, and more.
No shame in going to U of A non-Honors so your student should be proud. The campus and Tucson are both fantastic. And many of her classmates will have gotten into the schools you listed - and those with even more pedigree - so she shouldn’t see it as a let down.
Congrats to her - and she learned a life lesson - always go all the way - so in that sense, this is a learning opportunity.
I agree that U of Arizona has a lot of top programs beyond honors, and many smart kids get rejected form honors but still go there. It’s a competitive program. Also, not all kids want to live in honors housing, so maybe search for roommates with similar interest in academics. Not sure, but I think you can also apply next year.
Have you been to that dorm? I was ready to sell my house and move in It’s nice!! But I do agree with your message!!
Funny story, actually. My husband did that tour. My daughter missed the memo to sign up for housing before April 1st rather than deposit day. Now, we are stuck in the aid battle between two schools and she will have to opt into a roommate group to get Honors Village. (That’s how I know honors kids are spread around campus). Our competitive high school had a lot of top kids who did not get into Franke, so I am sure something will work out.
