I am a deaf student who got accepted to Mechanical engineering as a major. I am definitely going to UCB next year. I wonder if there are any deaf student in UCB, so that I know if UCB has good service for deaf people. I heard that two deaf students in UCB got dropped out last year, because it was soo challenging for them. It would be great if u have any informations about deaf services, and if u have seen any deaf student in UCB.

you can be my friend :)

There’s a deaf student in my Classics lecture. Berkeley has a very good Disabled Students Program. The student has several sign language interpreters with him so that he can understand what the prof is saying. Also, I’m one of many notetakers for the DSP program, which means that every lecture, I take notes and either email or dropbox my notes to students in the class who have requested the notes.

aww thanks, I’d like to be ur friend =)

wow tastybeef im going to award you my Student of the Year award to you. it includes a $5 gift card to McDonalds. cheerios! yay onlyone! im a spring admit so you’ll have to wait for me. stand outside the student store ok…you’ll recognize me! www.myspace.com/jellybean1606 i look like a jellybean! kinda.

oh icic. I never thought about actually taking notes on the papers. Does UCB have transcribers, who just type what professors say on the laptop?

lol ok, hopefully i will see you soon. I’m gonna add u in myspace =)

k! yay! new friend!

well…uh…that’s what many of us do. If it’s science classes, then it’s usually impossible to take notes on the laptop, but if it’s just straight speech lectures, it can be easily done. That’s what I currently do - I just type up notes on the laptop and email them to the DSP students after every lecture.

Oh, ok. Thanks tasty. This info was helpful.

My friend has a deaf student in his math class. He enjoys watching the signing far more than paying attention. :)

You should call the DSP office for more information about the services available.
