Is there any hope left?

I was hoping for Berkeley, NYU, or UCLA, but with my recent sat scores and a look at past accomplishments, I dont think I can do it. Here are my stats:

female, mixed ethnicity, Junior
4.05 uw gpa( I dont know how to find weighted)
1650 new sat(ouch, I know, but I was scoring in the 2000’s on practice tests and will retake in October)
sat II’s(unsure about those, but taking them in June)
will have 10 honors/ap courses by end of senior year
I’ve been in girl scouts for 12 years and am currently working on my gold award; tons of service hours; memership in CSF, NHS, and Spanish Honors Society; greatly involved in drama, sadd club, spanish club, golf, key club, and asb, yearbook staff for 2 years, and I show a lot of interest in my intended major (graphic design) through other activities.

so what’s my shot (if there is any)? and any suggestions to help my sat’s and extracurriculars?

Are you a California resident? If so, what’s your UC GPA (<a href=“Admissions | University of California”>www.ucop.edu/pathways to find out how to compute it)? It’s really hard to say without those SAT II tests but I would not rule out any of these schools until you retake the SAT. In the meantime, keep those three on your list and start scoping out additional possibilities.

Actually, UCB and UCLA may not be good fits for you if you’re looking to focus on graphic design. Both focus more on studio art than on graphic design (and they both offer very few actual graphic design classes to begin with) You may find that your interests are better served elsewhere once you really start looking at the actual programs they offer.

I’d recommend you take a look at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s graphic design program if you want an excellent program in that area. It is selective but they place a lot of weight on your portfolio. Here’s a link: http://www.grc.calpoly.edu/</a></p>

You might also like UCSC or UCD, both of which have excellent art programs. A few good safeties to consider might be SDSU, Cal State Chico, and Humboldt State - again, all with very good art programs with a more specific graphic design focus than UCLA or UCB. You might also take a look at Cal Arts just to see if an art school might be a fit. With a few solid “good bets” on your list, you can apply to UCB, NYU and UCLA knowing that you have great alternatives just in case. Good luck!

For Berkeley… you need much more than that I think… get more activities in, and the GPA you gave BTW is weighted, unweighted doesn’t factor in anything above 4. And your SAT… really needs to go up for Berkeley

Thanks, I am a California resident by the way and as for my activities, there is not really much more I can do because my school and the area where i live don’t offer much and I have taken advantage of most of the opportunities I can.

What would be a good score on the new sat for Berkeley?

I would suggest that you check out this page <a href=“Admissions | University of California”>www.ucop.edu/pathways which tells you (1) how to compute your UC GPA (2) the average scores of past admits to the various UC schools (3) what they look for in admissions. Its not the most user friendly site so you have to dig around a bit to find stuff but it is all there.

But again, PLEASE be sure to look at the art curriculum at all of the UC’s very closely. Go to the web sites of their art departments and look at the classes they offer. They are not your best bet if you want to major or work in graphic design (indeed none of them have that major, only fine or studio art). Their art programs are great if you want to do studio art (i.e. painting, drawing, sculpture), but not the place to go if you want to pursue graphic design in my opinion. For that, I would suggest Cal Poly’s graphic design program or one of the cal states.

The UC’s are great, but honestly, they are not always the best choice for certain majors and career goals.

Good luck.

I looked at that site before, but I must have missed something and will look at it. would Cal-State Long Beach’s graphic design program be up to par with what I need?

hi greenorange: i think your GPA is really good, and the amount of AP/honors classes you have is great for UCB and UCLA. your SAT scores are low, i’ve read that UCLA and UCB expect 2100 and above; but you can always retake them. and UC schools usually weigh SAT IIs more than SAT I…so if you do really good on the SAT IIs, raise your SAT score, i think you have a pretty good shot. oh, and write a GREAT essay; sometimes people overlook those, but they could be really important. i dont think your as bad off as you think you are…good luck! :)
