Question pretty much says it. If you are an unhooked asian applicant who has gotten admitted into multiple ivies, could you please tell me your story. Why do you think you got in to multiple ivies? What made you stand out? Did you expect to get into 2,3, or even 4 ivies, or was it a surprise?
It happened more often than you think. Admissions into ivies are highly correlated events.
What @hzhao2004 said. I know lots of them. For the ones I’m familiar with, usually it’s a combination of top grades from a top school (leading to, I assume, very strong LoRs, and with college counselors who provide useful guidance on the app/essays), very high test scores and demonstrated leadership or talent in some area, preferably not one where Asians are overrepresented, unless the kid is really top-tier in that area. If the talent/area of interest points to an underrepresented major, that’s a plus.
My kid’s HS had multiple kids go to Ivy’s this year. All but one is Asian, and that one is Hispanic. High grades, high test scores, good community work, good extracurriculars. Nothing outside the usual.
The school that ought to be investigated is Stanford. Even though we’re less than a half-hour drive from Stanford, not one single kid got in.
I know many Asian HS students who have had multiple acceptances to Ivy and equivalent schools. And I don’t think anyone was surprised – they were outstanding candidates.
Of course. But the mistake is looking at this as simplisticly as “Asian” and missing what it really takes. You have a full presentation to make in the app and supps. You need to have self matched (to what they look for, not just what you want.) Too many kids just think about stats and some titles and miss the rest, the deeper points.
And that includes knowing, as we always say, that not all Ivies are the same or look for the same in applicants. You need to do the due diligence, be savvy. Tippy Top savvy.
