So, I’m currently a rising sophomore. In eighth grade I took a virtual course for high school credit. The instructor constantly made errors when putting in grades (pretty much everybody got at least one 0 for something they actually turned in), and accidentally put in my final exam grade as a 0 when I got an automated email after the exam saying I made a 97. This dropped my final course grade from a 97 to an 82, which happened to be a C on the old 7-point grading scale. I emailed the teacher and he corrected the mistake, and the correct grade appeared on my report card. However, I emailed my counselor a few weeks ago asking for my GPA and class rank. With 13 total HS credits, I expected a 4.69 WGPA (which I calculated before I received it), but my actual GPA was a 4.55. Something didn’t add up, so I kept crunching the numbers until I decided to calculate what my GPA would be had I got an 82 in that course, and the numbers matched. My grade is still a 97 in PowerSchool and on my old report card, but apparently not on my transcript. Along with dropping my WGPA, this C ruins my 4.0 and all-A transcript (bringing my unweighted GPA down to a 3.846). Also, most infuriatingly, I go to a pretty competitive high school so now my rank isn’t even in the top quarter (#30/110), when I’d be #15-20 without it.
I would make an appointment with your guidance counselor once school starts and bring all the information and ask if it can get corrected.
I would say you have a chance to get it corrected since you seem to have documents to back up your claim. Meet with your counselor. Mistakes can be corrected.
Yes, grades can be changed after the fact for administrative errors. There’s a teacher at my school who will change your grade if you do awesome on the AP test too. (Not exactly relevant, but shows it’s possible).
We had that problem with some grades from our middle school. We were able to have the middle school resend the grades to the high school and then the admin for the district fixed our transcript. It took two tries but it got fixed.
This isn’t relevant but is a funny story about administrative grade changes. My youngest is going into 8th grade. In 1st grade she was a decent student all year. She didn’t get letter grades but rather grades like satisfactory progress. She had a teacher who was retiring and let us all know. The last day of school my daughter brought home her report card. I was surprised to see that she had an F for the year in both reading and math.
I called the school and was able to talk to the 1st grade teacher. I kindly asked her if my daughter had failed both subjects though she had satisfactory progress all 4 marking periods (and I had never been told she was in danger of ailing). The conversation didn’t go well and the teacher told me I couldn’t read. I told her her I was not the one just finishing 1st grade and I knew it was the letter F.
I emailed the principal and explained that while I had spoken to the teacher she couldn’t see what I was seeing and she was leaving for the day and retiring so not sure when I could try to meet up with her in person. The principal emailed me back within minutes and said it wasn’t possible to get Fs in first grade and that she had never seen my daughter’s name mentioned as needing help or anything. A few minutes after that I received another email that the principal could indeed see the Fs on her report card but had no idea why and she would look into it more. A few days later we got a new report card in the mail and with satisfactory for the year.
A tad more relevant though still not high school. In either 5 or 6th grade (same math teacher) the online grading system was new. I had to sign for every math test no matter what the grade and a 97 on paper was inputted as a 79 y the math teacher. My daughter asked about it and the teacher just said her grade was a 97 in her records. Come report card in brought her grade to a B. I was at the school helping with pto stuff the day report cards were given out. The principal came over and asked my daughter why she wasn’t happy so she explained the grade. The principle told me to go show the math teacher who was so distracted by detention duty that I said I would email her. The principal asked me if I got it straightened out and I said not yet since it was not a good time to talk. She said she would look into it. I did tell her that why I highly doubted it I know kids can change their grades etc but that I did think it was just a typo. The next day the online grade was changed. DD didn’t get a new report card but the grade was fixed and dd was happy. The principal emailed me that the math teacher saw the error when she had a chance to check her book with the online grade and it was indeed a typo. The teacher apologized to my daughter even though it wasn’t necessary.
