I am wondering if there are any Deerfield students attending the New England Conservatory during coming school year.

Apparently not

Yes, at least two definitely (NEC Prep), possibly a couple of others. Is that what you mean-- or did you mean for college?

Yes, NEC prep!! I have D, 7th grader, boarding at Bement and was wondering about transportation options. Any suggestions ??

skieurope…I should have phrased the question better.

Well, the 2 I know for sure are both day kids, and they live enough of a distance from school (and the Mass Pike is in the other direction) to make hitching a ride a little difficult, unless there were a way to get your DD to their house Saturday mornings. But, as Deerfield has been (pretty dramatically) expanding its music program, there has definitely been talk of getting boarders there as well. If there were a few kids, then maybe they would come up with a van arrangement. I would talk to whomever does music at Bement, and maybe contact (or have them contact) Peter Warsaw, who does the chamber music at DA. If you look at a map, one of the kids who goes lives around Northampton; the other down in Longmeadow. There are definitely other kids who go to the NEC both around Northampton and Springfield, so maybe you could also ask if there’s a way someone at the NEC could give you a contact list? Again, the one problem with just going with a parent is that you’d be asking that parent to drive 20-30 minutes in the wrong direction, and THEN go to Boston and back. So, unless you can arrange a ride to someone’s house, pushing for a van might be the way to go. I do know one boy (not at DA) who takes the bus every week to the NEC from Northampton, but I’m not sure that’s so easy from Deerfield. If the schools would set up a van (I assume there would be some charge for this), I’ll bet more kids would go, since I’ve heard several kids have at least talked about it.

The logistics are a real problem for sure. Thanks for your help.

You can also check for kids at Eaglebrook, although that’s less likey. I would pursue talking to Bement and DA though, because I KNOW some of the kids looking at DA were interested in the NEC (and they would be boarders), and DA is definitely trying to recruit high level musicians. Is your DD currently attending the NEC?

My DD is coming out of years at Bards prep. Her day at conservatory is very long!!
DD is just starting Bement in Sept and would really like to stay at the conservatory level.
She will be on Bements Orchestra but… Glad to hear DA is growing there music Dept.
I think DA might be the place for me to start my inquiry. THXS

Sounds good-- feel free to PM me with any questions (my DS does lots of music at DA).

Hi Daykidmom, should we send my DS video of piano and violin to head of music department to apply DA? Any suggestion?

You could (Ms. Roos), or you could send them to Peter Warsaw, who runs the chamber music class, conducts the orchestra, and teaches piano. If you are coming for an interview, ask the admissions people to visit the chamber music class, and write Mr. Warsaw to say you’d like to visit the class and talk about the music program there. That’s all assuming, of course, that your DS is planning on playing at DA. You can either send a DVD or an MP3file or link via email. In our experience, emails sometimes got buried, so a DVD worked better.

Very helpful, thank you so much! How good the kids need to be for instruments, such as piano and violin? Is that have to be international level? I understand DA application are all very competitive, what kind of personal profile might be accepted by DA? thanks again!

There’s a big range in musicianship. There are kids who just play on the orchestra and have been playing for just a few years all the way up to kids who have are very serious, have won competitions, etc. In fact, there is an orchestra with a broad range of kids-- and then also a chamber orchestra with kids who play at a higher level (so they play more difficult music and it is more polished-- but they also play in the general orchestra). There is a chamber music class that meets daily and kids are assigned chamber groups based on auditions-- so, again, there is quite a range (although no beginners in there). But that way every student can play music that will challenge him/her. Pianists are always welcome-- to play in chamber groups (piano trios, etc.) as well as with the orchestra (piano pieces or concerto movements). From what you’ve said, I’m sure your DS would fit in–maybe piano for chamber and violin for orchestra. Music can be a hook at Deerfield, because they have been building their program. For it to serve as a real hook, however, the kids need to be fairly accomplished (not internationally known or anything, but quite accomplished). You can PM me with more specific details or questions if you like. I’m not quite sure what you’re asking about the personal profile, can you ask that another way? Again, I’ll try to answer.

Thanks a lot for sharing your expertise, my DS started play piano when she was 4 and she went to a lot music festival and assembly before. She won Gold for 7 years group and Silver at 10 years group in Canadian National music competition. She started to play violin 5 years ago but seriously have learned for 2 years. She plays in Vancouver Youth Orchestra this year in first violin group and she really loves it. As I was told too much kids play piano and violin, so it won’t help kids to get accepted. Beside music, her SSAT is 2230, but she’s not athletic at all. She is president of Model Union in her school. She loves computer programming, math, English writing and speak fluent English, Chinese, French and some Spanish. Should she make appointment to meet other teacher when she do admission interview?

by the way, I can not find email for Mr. Peter Warsaw in DA’s website, do you mind share it with us? thanks a lot and have a wonderful weekend!

I sent you a private message. Let me know if you have any problem getting it.
