Is there anything I need to know about FAFSA or PROFILE?

I’ll be completing both this weekend, which will be a few days before the priority deadlines for some of the colleges I applied to (Feb 15th) and I was wondering if there’s anything I needed to know about FAFSA or PROFILE right now so that I won’t come across any unexpected delays. I don’t want to be like “Oh no, I didnt know that I had to…” and end up not getting everything in on time or anything like that. I dont mean having tax forms and stuff, I’m talking about procedural type stuff, or requirements for sending in copies of forms. Thanks.

It’s best to file online rather than by mailing in the form

Do you have a PIN for the FAFSA? Does one of your parents? If not, you need to get them NOW - they are required for signing the form on-line.

Do you have more than 6 schools to apply to? If so, and you don’t yet have your PINs (which take 2-3 days to get electronically), you may not make the deadline for all of them. You can only apply to 6 schools at once on the FAFSA. Then, if you’ve applied on-line, in 3-5 days you get what’s known as an SAR - that tells you that your FAFSA has been processed and it’s gone to those 6 schools. Then you have to go into the FAFSA form and modify it by deleting the original 6 and adding the next schools, and submit. That takes 1-2 days to get the SAR for that modification.

See why we parents always suggest that forms be done well before deadlines?
