I am aplying to an university and on the web site they put students info so prospective students can ask question. One of the student is double majoring in my native language and in my future major. So I thought about saying hi in my native language and write a sentence in it when I ask the question. Will this be ok? I am wondering about it because I am not sure if the message will go directly to him.

Just ask him the question in English, otherwise you’re gonna look really weird to the student and whomever might read the message.

Hmm. I think it’s a neat idea. You’ll stand out in his mind. However, I would just stick to the greeting and maybe the salutation in your native language, because you don’t want to make him feel stupid if he doesn’t quite get what you’re asking. (Sorry, I’m assuming it’s a guy) Also, if his info is on the school’s website, this probably isn’t his first letter received.

Ok I will stick to the greeting and ask my question in English.
