Is this a good essay topic?

First of all to clear things up, this is not an actual college essay, but I am applying for the Governor’s Honors Program at Valdosta University. This means my essay is basically a college essay, because I have to stand out from all the other students.

1) Describe your interest in your nomination area. (I got nominated in math)

I wrote about how my perspective of numbers changed. As a kid, I saw numbers as a boring and lifeless mathematical concept. But in 7th grade, I found out that you can’t divide a number by 0, so I googled it that day and it became one of my favorite numbers for its special properties. I soon realized that many numbers had special properties as well, and I basically got interested in number theory which changed how I see numbers today. Lastly in my essay, I used numbers as a metaphor to a lost language, because every number has its own secrets yet to be discovered by mathematicians and number theorists.

If you’re wondering what’s my favorite number, it’s 3435.

It sounds good, but u need to express it in a vivid way. The use of metaphors and anecdotes should be “showing” rather than “telling” because your topic is something which makes the readers tick if you induce life into it.

Good Luck!!!

I think it’s a wonderful essay topic and an unique one, discussing your initial passion of a math. Make sure you focus most of the essay on you, and not math concepts. Good luck!

The topic sounds interesting. Definitely focus it on you and try to think of a creative way to say what you want. Don’t be cliche and very straightforward because after all, you want to stand out.
