Is this a good idea for an essay? (Yale EA applicant)

I’m starting to think about essays, and will probably begin over the summer this year. I am leaning heavily towards writing an essay about music’s impact on my life (I’ve been involved with Indian vocal music for 14 years, am a traveling performing artist in several states and a few countries, and am signed to a record label in India).

I wanted to write about why singing alone in an empty room, for me, is more difficult than singing for a huge audience. There’s a few reasons why this is true; there’s no one there to cheer for me, to completely ignore my mistakes, to tell me that they think I’m an awesome singer. I have to deal with my own judgment, and I am hardest on myself. Learning to be comfortable with singing alone has been a struggle throughout 14 years of practice, and it is teaching me to be comfortable with myself and to maintain an inner confidence despite the opinions of others.

An essay like this would be rather abstract, I guess…do you think it could work?

Writing about music would be a pretty trite idea. However, in all honesty, it doesn’t matter what topic you write about; if you feel like you can churn out something genuine, then do it.

I would recommend being specific, like writing about a certain time when you were singing alone that you were finally able to attain the confidence you needed, or something like that.

Like the poster above me said, it could work as long as you avoid the pitfalls (every topic has them, some more than others).

Though common, I think if executed well, it could be a great essay, particularly because Indian vocal music is unique. But, as with all essay topics, it’s all about the execution.
