Is this a good idea, or no?

I really want to major in International Relations and learn Chinese (have to take a language). I also want to minor in dance because I like performance arts and I do want to have some fun in college by minoring in dance. But I also want to take another minor in either business or journalism. What would be a good idea? Double majoring and a minor or a major and 2 minors? What should I do? I don’t want to die with workload (although I don’t think minoring in dance will be that hard).

And when I said business, I meant marketing.

Major and two minors. Double major and a minor will take you a long time to complete.

You can take several dance classes without minoring in dance, so I think I would just check whether the dance department seems active and vibrant. Many schools don’t have undergraduate business or journalism classes, so you have to decide how important those are to you. Northwestern is known for journalism, for example. Undergraduate business —U. Penn, Boston University, RPI, NYU----it depends on your stats, of course. Most schools, even small liberal arts schools, will have an international relations degree and chinese offerings. If you particularly want a smaller school, Middlebury would be great for international relations and its fabulous chinese department. Macalaster is another possible small school. Tufts is known for international relations and might have a business school (I can’t remember). Also an active theater department and the possibility for dance classes in Boston. Check the websites carefully to see what the course offerings and major options are like.

Well I want to go to George Washington. They have an amazing IR program and chinese languages. They also have a minor in dance and a journalism minor. They also have a B.A/M.D program where I can get a bachelors and a masters in 5 years. Would that be a good idea? Maybe Masters in IR and Bachelors in either dance, journalism, or business? Which would be better? I’m sure you guys will probably say journalism or business, though. I mainly want to work in the government, but I want to keep my options open because you never know what will happen.

It really depends on you and the school that you end up at. Wrt to dance, are you hoping to perform or just take classes to keep up with your art? Find out whether GW (or other schools you are looking at) require you to be officially in the dance program (majoring or minoring) to be allowed to audition for performances. If not, consider just taking the classes you want without making it a minor. My daughter is a dancer in her university’s ballet company which is purely extracurricular and she still ends up dancing most days between classes and rehearsals.

My son did complete a poly sci major along with minors in econ and music in four years, so it is doable. However, he had a ton of AP credits that eliminated the need for him to take most of the gen-ed classes.

A more fundamental question is whether you need all of the majors/minors to get where you want in life. Generally the additional credentials beyond the first major do not help you much in landing your first job or getting into the grad school of your dreams. You may want to consider concentrating on your most important field as your major and then using your electives to take whatever courses interest you in the other field(s) without worrying about completing all of the requirements of getting the minor or second major.

UC Berkeley offers a major in International studies:
[Overview | IAS](http://www.ias.berkeley.edu/degree_programs)

…that can focus on Chinese:

[Center for Chinese Studies, UC Berkeley](Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) | Institute of East Asian Studies)

…and you can minor in Dance:
[Dance & Performance Studies Minor](Dance & Performance Studies | Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies)

^^that makes sense. So I can just take dance as electives and learn eveything without worrying about completing the minor?
