D (16) was in the mall last weekend and picked up an employment application at a certain name brand retail store, which had a table set up. She filled it out and we returned it yesterday, where the manager told her to return today for an interview. Today, the manager couldn’t find her application, but interviewed her for about 25 minutes anyways. She was told they are interviewing for a couple more weeks to fill several positions.

At the end of the interview, she gave D several 30% off coupons for a “shopping party” to be held Thursday evening and told her to come with some of her friends. This has raised my scam-radar, as it seems to me like a way to get a bunch of girls to come to a “shopping event” with pressure to buy on the hope of getting a job, and then never actually getting hired. Has anyone else heard of anything like this? Thoughts?

In the recent McDonald’s hiring blitz, the applicants were given coupons to come back sometime and enjoy free french fries or something equally small.

That would raise my scam-radar, as well. The fact that the manager interviewed her for 25 minutes is a good sign. Please tell me that the manager had her fill out another application before she left.

A retail chain twice sent people out of their store to try to recruit my daughter as she was walking outside of the store. I found it odd that they would do such a thing , based on her appearance , but they told her that she " looked " like she should be working there. Really rubbed her the wrong way .

There was a store in our upscale mall that paid some young fellow to stand in front with his shirt off! – I thought that was a rather brazen marketing ploy…
