Is this a hook?

I have collaborated with the Thalassemia Center here in my country and organized an awareness campaign. I went to several schools and talked about the disease and handed out brochures. I also organized blood donation that was given to thalassemia patients in this very center. I would like to major in genetics (thalassemia is a genetic disorder btw) and this disease is very widespread in my country because of a lack of proper education (cousin and close relative marriages are primal factors in the spread of the disease. Also, the study is genetics is not developed here at all. I will probably write about this is my essay - how genetic disorders are widespread here and after receiving an education, I would like come back here and open a new research center or sth like that idk yet). Is this something that will make my application stand out?

This is a very good EC but not a hook.

Hooks are:
URM
Legacy
Parent is a donor
Last name is Obama, Kennedy etc.
Recruited Athlete I think?

The things I listed above SIGNIFICANTLY raise one’s chances of acceptance at selective (holistic) universities.
While your EC is very strong and shows a lot, it is not a hook and most EC’s generally do not have the same weight as the previous things mentioned.

While a great topic for your essays, most people consider a “hook” as; 1) A recruited athlete 2) A legacy 3) Have a family member who is a major donor to the school 4) Your parents are famous.

Alright, thank you
