Is this a hook?

<p>So I came to America from China in 4th grade and entered ESOL I. Then in 5th grade (while still in ESOL) I applied for the science/math/comp sci Middle School Magnet Program (take 100 people from county), and I was accepted.
Does this sound like a hook or a good essay topic? </p>

<p>Haha yea I guess hook isn’t good enough. But I wrote my common app on that topic… as a “overcome a challenge” kind of thing. Do you think that works?</p>
