Is this a nice way to utilize my knowledge?

I am an upcoming senior, and I have a deep passion for teaching and helping (many, many hours of free tutoring) others understand things that took me literally eons to understand. And I love teaching in a very interactive, teen-relatable way, which many of those who I tutor say helps them comprehend the material.

I took a course this summer at a top-uni (I already know these programs don’t help my app, lol), and I did well in this class (got an A). I loved the material, and it steered me dramatically toward the major I desire to eventually take. Additionally, I liked the way in which my teacher taught. When I needed clarification on any topics my professor taught, however, I never found any videos on YouTube that explained well the topics, which was very surprising considering it was an intro class that anyone in that major would learn. Because I love teaching and love the material, I want to make videos of myself explaining these topics in a KhanAcademy-esque way (i.e. using a whiteboard and drawing ideas).

Is it a good idea if I can make quality videos teaching this material? It’s something that I think all day about producing once I get back home.

Why not? As long as making these videos doesn’t interfere with your grades or test prep, I see no issue. But have you considered that volunteering yourself as a tutor might achieve the same goal and give more tangible results? It owuld take some time to get any kind of substantial viewership in time for your college apps. But there is not harm in trying.

I second the tutoring idea (in addition to the video making). Personally, I felt like teaching others helped me learn more about certain subjects, especially intro material. Also, I tutor for $20 an hour so it’s a decent school-year job.

Don’t olagerize from your prof’s wording or materials.

You could definitely pursue this idea, but I think it should be done in conjunction with tutoring.
And like @intparent said, make sure you give credit to your professor if you’re quoting him or using his ideas.

I think that’s a great idea! I LOVE the crash course videos that John and Hank Green do on youtube. I actually currently make youtube videos (not educational at all tho lol), so if you decide to go through with it, I’d love to see them! Also, if you have any technical questions, let me know (idk how much experience you have with it tho maybe its a ton lol) I think making videos is a great hobby (from personal experience), and I’m sure you’ll get more out of it if it’s educational!

@intparent , like @yonceonhismouth said, is it alright if I do credit my professor (say his name and affiliations, put them in description), not copy his words, and use my own analogies?

@Lindagaf Thanks for your support! The only problem is that there is no course in my school district that teaches Astronomy. Most of concepts are taught in college, none of which are within a reasonable radius from me lol.

@jakejake637 Thanks!! I love those videos, too! So very helpful. I definitely plan to go through with them, and I will let you know if I need any editing help or the like. I appreciate your willingness to help so much.

Hey, everyone! Thank you all for your support. A month later, my first video is up! The channel name is: Astroteen. It’s a video on deriving Kepler’s Third Law.

Great idea in my eyes! Best of luck!
