Is this a strength or a weakness?

Hey CCers,

I applied to Columbia SEAS last spring but was unfortunately released from the waitlist. After finishing up my first semester at a state university with great grades, I’m going to apply for transfer because I’m still in love with CU.

I’ve been wondering… the supplement asks if I’ve previously applied, to which I bubbled “Yes.” But for essays, is it a good idea to mention that I was waitlisted last spring? I’m not sure if they will view this as determination, and appreciate that I am still very interested in the school. Or on the other hand, do you think they would view it as a weakness, such that since I didn’t quite make it the first time, I must not be a good fit for CU this time around as well?

Thanks!

well they already have it in their records that you were released from waitlist, so if you were to mention it in your essay, i doubt it would hurt you. a willingness and real desire to go to the college can be a good thing in your essay, but realize you were probably not released from waitlist because you didn’t want to go to the college enough.
