Is this a stretch to put under awards?

My D was nominated by her school for a community service scholarship. Each high school can nominate 1 student from each senior class and then 100 students nationwide are selected for the scholarship. There are 460 students in her class so she is excited that the cmmittee picked her but didn't think it should be used under the award section on her resume. What do parents think. As always thanks for the input!

Yes, she should include it. She should say that she was the 1 student of the 460 seniors who was nominated for the XXXX community service scholarship. Being nominated is an honor.

Thanks Northstarmom-don't know what we would do without this forum!

Sounds like the Prudential Award program. I would absolutely put that under the Awards list on the college app. BTW, I don't know for sure, but I have a hunch that most adcoms are familiar with the program.

I would also figure out a way to highlight the community service activity underlying the nomination.

BTW, I think they award two scholarships in each state - one for a high school student and one for a younger age group. In addition, they awards several statewide Distinguished Finalis "honorable mentions". For example, Massachusetts named six Distinguished finalists in addition to the two state winners.

Here's national list by state:
