I’m applying to exeter and I was kind of blanking on what to do for the one about what are you passionate about so I decided to do “I am passionate about words.” Is this incredibly stupid or worth a shot?
Its worth a shot; its certaintly unique and depends on how ur going to support it. I guess, maybe There’s some sort of backstory to ur liking for words?? Btw, I’m confused, can we write prose for the essays?
I think it’s an interesting concept, but you’re going to have to be very careful about how you do it.
Don’t make it entirely about word choice or languages, but what words have the power to do and convey to people. Maybe about how we can strike down barriers that words create.
Whatever you eventually do, it will be unique. Just make sure it isn’t unique in the wrong way.
Prose is OK, but may come off as simply mediocre if not done right. Just take care and make it stand out somehow.
Are you a philologist?
J.R.R. Tolkien was passionate about words and you can see the results.
Eh, I argue that Tolkien was a terrible writer, in terms of style, who had a really good idea. If someone like Rowling had the idea for the Lord of the Rings series, the possibilities would have been limitless…
I read the LOTR books, and while they were complex and good in a sense, I couldn’t take the constant “Frodo and Sam skipped merrily along the path while singing happy little frolicky songs” type thing.
It’s not stupid at all. Go for it!
peytonmg - it is a fine idea. However, once you have a good subject, it is not as much what you write about, but rather how and why. Other advice here is on target here. Make sure you have meaningful and compelling examples in addition to writing really, really well. If you say you are passionate about words, your usage and selection better show that as much as what you actually say (without going overboard with gratuitously showy or strange words)…
Anonymousia & theidoit - prose is the usual form for essays, so not only may you do so, you should. The alternative would be poetry or verse of some form, which is usually highly discouraged as too risky (although there are anecdotal stories of kids who pulled it off well).
Thanks guys! I guess I’ll give it a shot! hoping for the best!

Oops, I meant to direct my first comment above to ooblackjack2, not peytonmg.
Interesting theory.
I wonder if it is correct.
The Hobbits you know don’t skip and sing?
@BlairParent Wait, so ppl actually write poetry for the essays? Also, I’m not quite sure what is prose, exactly. I usually like to write in a very flowery and descriptive language, not really the standard 5 paragraph essay with a reasoning sentence, three examples, etc. Which style whould I do?
Your “very flowery and descriptive language” is basically prose.
You should write about something which you are truly passionate. I cringed when my DS wrote about a certain video game for that type of question. I think it was different than others and stood out. It might not have been the standard deep thought type of answer, but it was honest!
