Is this an internship, research, or internship research?

I know the title says summer internship, but the description sounds like a research project especially with words like “propsals,” “projects” “matched with a faculty member.”. I pasted the info below. Sounds like an REU to me. In terms of grad school, which one would they prefer, an REU or this(If it’s not an REU)?

Summer Undergraduate Internships will be awarded each Spring. Students chosen for support should:
Be strong in the appropriate academic areas
Have a strong interest in space projects and programs
Be matched with a faculty member and specific project to assure that the student has a defined task and a mentor.

The space-related summer project on which the student works can be a part of a sponsored project or some topic of high interest to both the student and the faculty member. This program supports student stipends (in the form of student hourly pay), and normally not other project costs.
Space Grant supports both graduate and undergraduate students through a network of 52 university-based consortia in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In 1998, the network includes over 490 academic institutions. Each consortium receives fellowship and scholarship funds* from NASA. Most consortia supplement their NASA contributions with state or university funds. The consortia then distribute those funds competitively to student applicants from their member institutions.

Proposals two pages or less in length may be submitted either by interested students or by a faculty member nominating a student. It should contain information on the work to be done, the associated benefit to the student and the “sponsoring” faculty member, the academic record of the student, and a statement of agreement signed by both the student and the faculty member. A cover page containing a title, the funding requested, faculty and student names, mail and e-mail addresses and telephone numbers should be attached to each proposal.
Proposals should be delivered to:

I noticed that the term “REU” is mostly used for NSF-funded programs. Summer programs funded by other institutions usually go by a different name.

Grad schools won’t care what your program is called.

Oh I see, but does what does this sound like to you? Internship or research?
