Is this annoying?

Im using the tulane personal app and there is no recomendation required. however, i have a rec from my math teacher (who obviously talks about my mathematical skills, I got an A in his class), my english teacher (did fairly well with a B+ in a challenging class), my advisor ( who will talk about how i achieved all my goals he set out from me in high school) and my college advisor. is this too many recs to send when the school says they dont even require one for the tulane personal app. also i have 2 more legacies at this school that i cant put in the personal app because there isnt enough room. what should i do about these problems? thanks

I think that’s too many. My guidance counselor automatically sent a letter (which details my writing abilities and talks about my struggles in math and science courses early on at a math-and-science oriented school). I had my English teacher (who refers to me as the star of the English department) send one. My understanding is that it contains “testimonies” from other English teachers I’ve had.

The perfect candidate for admission is described as not necessarily well-rounded, but strongly passionate about something particular. Both of your academic recommendations seem like they describe you as a good student in two different subjects, but it doesn’t sound like they exemplify you as a passionate individual. Just a thought.

The school gets 45,000 applicants, for crying out loud! “Recommendations are optional” could be a formality, for all I know.

Then again, if you’ve got that many legacies, you might be a shoo-in no matter what! :P

If you want to send recommendations, should you consider using the universal application? Does it have a place to submit LORs?
Seems to me, if you want to submit additional supporting documentation, let them send the LORs. Alternatively, if you are applying for the DHS or Community service scholarships, might one of those LORs be appropriate for those?

I have forgotten-- is there a deadline for the Personal app? Just wondered.

My advice is to just put in the legacies that are the closest relatives. It is nice if your second cousin went, but I don’t think that is what they really care about. As far as the LOR’s, I guess I am having a hard time seeing how it hurts to send them. If they don’t read them it is no different than having not sent them, unless they would be put off by it. But I can’t see why they would be, it just shows that you really want to go. They can decide if they have time to read them or not. I think the only one I would question sending is the college adviser. Is this someone at your school, or someone that was hired? If it is the latter, I think it makes no sense to send that. Even if it is someone at your school, how well do they really know you? Think about that when deciding.

Tulane does require the counselor recommendation - as for additional teacher, community, legacy, etc. recs, the school asks that no more than 3 are sent. They are completely optional. Think about reading 100,000+ extra letters of recommendation…

well my 2 grandparents went, both my parents went, and my aunt went as well. should i add all of these?

parents and grandparents are enough.

Hi, thegreentea68:

Well, if your aunt has a building or an endowed chair named after her, I would definitely list her :)

LOL, if she had a building or an endowed chair, they wouldn’t be on here asking these questions.
