Last night I couldn’t get to sleep because I was thinking of a philosophical topic (which I can’t say here lest someone take my idea) and I just randomly started writing about it.
Can I use this semi-first person essay as my application to NYU? They say it can be a “Topic of Your Choice”, so I don’t see why I can’t write about a certain human/social trait that annoys me.
Or does it HAVE to be about yourself and specifically how you contributed to/learned from something?

Any answer is greatly appreciated, since I have to begin writing soon!

Whatever you write about, you need to relate it somehow to yourself.

it doesn’t specifically have to be about yourself. Rather than relating it to yourself (which seems rather linear), perhaps your through your writing you could reveal some of your thoughts and ideas, which gives a deeper understanding of you as a person anyway.

If it’s done carefully that can work, but sometimes people lose focus on what the college essays are really supposed to be about: themselves.

^Agreed. Always keep in mind that it is YOU and your experiences and personality that colleges are trying to get to know.
