Is this appropriate to put in a college essay?

“I pity the person who holds back in life because they fear what others will think of them. I have never let that stop me and I never will.”

I think this might rub admissions the wrong way. Is it too negative?

anyone? please??

Hmmm…that could come off as condescending - not really the route you want to go. Maybe its just the wording. “Pity” seems a bit mean almost.

I agree, the word pity is what would be the most off-putting in this. Make the statement focus entirely on you and leave out the third party. That way it focuses on your strengths without appearing like you’re putting others down.

Also “the person” and “they” & “them” don’t agree – singular and plural

oo…it really depends on how you put it into the essay…if you reallylike it, just be yourself, because it is you who the adm wants to see

Yeah, I agree with everyone else in that “pity” has a slightly harsh, off-putting connotation. And also check over the subject agreement! ;D

I don’t mind pity as you used it, always use your own words.
