Can I get into Michigan, or any great college for that matter, with a D in Geometry GT Freshman year and a C in AP Government Sophomore year? Honestly, everyone tells me don’t worry about it because all my other grades were good, but I feel I’m not going to a good college at this point, especially not Michigan.
I keep reading on the forums that if you explain it, it may cancel out bad grades, but when exactly do you explain that?

If you have an upward trend in grades you should be fine. Least I think so.

Considering they use a broader criteria than your grade in Freshman year Geometry, and AP government sophomore year (hell, I didn’t even take that second one), yes, your chances still exist.

Though it really is very hard to chance anyone based off of two grades in two specific classes.

I think that’s about it!

That GPA needs to go up a lot. You still can do it, but you really got to focus on getting those grades up your junior year.

Yea GPA is a little low, work hard junior year!

michigan accepts 1/2 applicants, on average. given the number of mediocre applicants admitted each year, i doubt you will get rejected.

^^
Where is that stat for 1/2 applicants? I would only think that that would apply to instate, unless that 50% is including both instate and out of state.

^Overall it’s just under 50% acceptance rate. That said, charlieharper has no idea what he’s talking about. He told this person based solely off of their GPA that they’ll probably get in, with a GPA which is far below average.

I said he [probably] wouldn’t get rejected, I didn’t say he would get in.

probably won’t get rejected with a 3.0 as an out of state applicant? I gotta agree with QwertyKey …

Charlie, only 25% of the students admitted into Michigan have SAT/ACT scores lower than 1300/28 and GPAs under 3.7.

This said, the OP is native American. That changes everything. She still needs to raise her GPA over her Junior year, but if she does, and manages a solid SAT (1900+), I like her chances…assuming she applies EA.

Thank you guys so much! I’ve been studying for the ACT since I was in middle school so I’m praying those go well. I also left out a few stats like community service and sports. I know my GPA is embarrassingly low, it’s been a rough two years with family stuff, so I won’t be totally surprised if I apply in get rejected, but I’m trying to make up for it in other places. I’ve heard high sats and a ton of community service helps. I’m also working towards my girl scouts gold award this year. Again, thanks for commenting (:

i like your chances if you write good essays, apply early, and raise that ACT score.

Most importantly, go for a 4.0 this year. Upward trend matters.

The acceptance rate will plummet this year, oos is very hard now, probably 30% or lower. You need perfect grades from now on.

You’ll get in.

^Yosup, I feel that’s rather cynical, and possibly inaccurate to say. Only 14% have a GPA lower than 3.6, as I recall. Nonetheless, s/he should make a point of detailing adverse issues in the environment that contributed to GPA/performance issues.

Also, Dizzyfeet has not mentioned which school s/he is applying to. Given the ECs and piano background, plus dance and musicals, if s/he is applying to the School of Music and Dance the minimum academic clearance to be eligible to audition IS 3.0. That said, most of the accepted applicants are more inline with the 3.7+ range of the rest of the university, but talent-based programs or strength in the arts can produce different outcomes for a rare few.

The Native American ancestry is honestly a +1.0 in your GPA so you have a 4.0 basically.
