Is this legitimate scholarship?

It appears to be a new scholarship. I would provide them lot of information but by providing them date of birth, and social security makes me nervous as there is no telephone number and any other beef about the organization. Wise parents what you think. Is it legitimate scholarship?

I was wondering if anyone from the lone star state of Texas can comment.

One more question my kid is early admitted to Yale. Kid is receiving a lot of financial aid say more than > $30,000 in need based aid. But hopefully any scholarship may help with the summer time earning or work study during college school year. In our case every penny helps us tremendously.

don’t know anything about the scholarship – but I do know that any scholarships earned can reduce the student required contribution, but that is it. After that – it reduces the aid the school will give dollar for dollar:

“Yale allows outside merit scholarship money to reduce the student effort. Outside aid that exceeds student effort reduces Yale need-based gift aid, but cannot be used to reduce the family contribution. Federal and state entitlement grants and tuition benefits from parents’ employers are not considered merit aid and reduce Yale scholarship aid dollar for dollar.”

It is a legit scholarship however it is for economically disadvantaged students. Since Yale has qualified your family to pick up about $15,000 per year I doubt that your son would be a very competetive candidate.

o’loog, Didn’t the OP say they getting over $30K in needbased /year? I think they might qualify. I’d sure check. I could be wrong. ;)

here’s more data:

Financial Need - Financial need will be considered and estimated on the basis of parents’ annual income, their assets, and of special family circumstances. In assessing need, the numbers, ages, and schooling needs of brothers and sisters will be taken into account

1.The scholarship is only available to graduating high school students planning to attend college during the 2007-2008 academic year. This scholarship is not renewable. The award is earmarked to cover **tuition and fees only./b

Mathmajor-- you could email the financial aid office at Yale for clarification and to verify the legitimacy of the scholarship. You’ll need to cultivate a relationship with them anyway down the road if your kid attends… so nothing like the present! The Finaid officer is the person best qualified to explain how the work study or summer piece of the award would go down if you get outside money (and you may not get to choose which of those to apply the scholarship to so it pays to check ahead of time…)

I have spoken with financial aid office in great length. They have been very helpful. I raised this legitimacy question out of fear giving someone getting a social security number.

Financial aid office told us that the student contribution of first $5500 in scholarship can be earned through scholarship. This $5500 will not result in any reduction of Yale aid. However, any aid earned after $5500 will reduce dollar for dollar for the Yale need based aid. The scholarship money would not lower the parent EFC of $5500 (only exception is if kids make more than $40,000 each year of college – which is unlikely).

Since no one knows, how much kid would receive in aid, thus kid is applying to many outside scholarship. We will pay our share of $5500 EFC. However, any outside scholarship money earned allow kid to have freedom to pursue many interest kid may have. This will allow kid to travel with musical groups or working on political campaigns or even pursuing summer study abroad. Fiscal freedom brings multiple opportunities to pursue one’s interest.

In HS kid received more than $25,000 for scholarships to do summer internships, travel abroad on musical trips, and many more exciting opportunities including summer language immersion. Every thing was paid through private scholarships many were need based and many were on merit basis including essay based competitions.

We are hoping for a similar result in college if possible. But unless one applies, one will never know. Many people may call us greedy, but it is fiscal freedom which is a big reality for us and many be all of you too.

Yes we did pay taxes on these awards. However every penny was spent to enrich kids educational experience.

Personally, I would NOT allow my D to file for ANY scholarship to ANY organization that does not provide a telephone number to verify the validity. There is an awful lot of personal information being asked on this application for a 1 in 3 chance of $1000.

A quick search of the mailing address, right down to the suite number (listed on the application) (Petrotel Inc 5240 Tennyson Parkway Suite 207, Plano, TX 75024 (972) 473-2767) leads me here:

I say no way to the “legitimacy” of this scholarship.

Am I being paranoid?

just a mom :

thanks. I am also paranoid of providing such a information to any organization which may not be legitimate. Thanks

yea, it is odd that there is no phone number…

mathmajor, how did you come to hear about this scholarship?

looks fishy to me! Not enough info about organization on home page. Most nonprofits have lots of PR info on home page, links, news, staff listings etc. Nada. Don’t fill it out!

Crumdegon:

My kid found this serach engines while looking for scholarships.
