Is this mistake irreversible?

Dd applied to a large in state university early action. She is very independent and insisted on not letting me see the application before submitting. Decisions came out Friday and when she logged into her account her application status was incomplete.

She had not completed this residency questionnaire. The email the school sent to let her know this back in October went to her spam folder. She completed the residency questionnaire and now her status shows application complete.

The deadline for regular desicion was Jan. 1. Is it hopeless? Any chance they will process her application now or with the regular decision people?
Would having her call admissions be helpful? What would she say?
This was one of her top choices.

One her frustrated Mom.

Have her call the school and ask…

@thumper1 is right. She created the problem, let her take care of it. She needs to “sweat it out” a bit…and worry that her mistake may cost her admission. Either way, she’ll learn from the consequences of not being so stubborn as to not letting someone else look over the app for errors or omissions.

This is the first of many times when she’ll be submitting important applications…future jobs, maybe grad school, etc. Another set of trusted eyes looking things over can make the difference. Recently a parent contacted me in a panic. Her child also hadn’t let her look over his med school app, and he had wrongly stated his home state of residency. This isn’t something that is easily fixed in the med school app process and probably cannot be fixed. He may end up with a failed app season because his true home state med schools rarely accept OOS students. A very costly error, simply due to stubbornness.

Definitely call the school and ask.’

A word of advice about something that has worked for me: Use multiple email accounts, one for giving out to the majority of places and a “private” one. I am very cautious about giving out my private email address. College apps would definitely fit into the private account. Check the spam folder for the private one at least. Sometimes an email I want gets routed to the spam box by the rules the email provider uses.

I also do check my spam folder for my non-private email but not as often and usually just a quick glance, just in case.

Ack…writing at 2am can be nasty…should say:

Either way, from this scare hopefully she’ll learn not to be so stubborn about letting someone else look over any future apps for errors or omissions.

This is why I had " the talk" with my kids even before they started the admission process. The one in which many parents let their kids know about what they can afford. For mine I told my kids they were very fortunate because there was no financial barrier to any school they wanted. But I set expectations for how the process would work and that included my review of all essays and applications. If you do this from the start you’ll get a lot less pushback.

Had she not logged into the account before Friday? Usually a good idea to log in once you submit to see if the app is complete. And, some schools actually track if you have logged in as a way to track interest, though probably not large state schools.
Agree with the other posters, have your D call.

Good advice maya54, but too late for us now. My daughter called the admissions office today. They weren’t terribly helpful or informative but did tell her to keep checking her account for an update.

I assume by this it is not a lost cause and they will still consider her application. Unfortunately they did not give her a timeline.

I’m trying to go with the attitude that what is meant to be is meant to be. Possibly a sign that she was not ready for a large school if she doesn’t get in because of this.

It seems that if she didn’t complete the residency form, she’d be admitted as an OOS student. That’s something that can be fixed by completing the form and proving she really is an instate student. My daughter is at a private school but there is extra FA for instate students. I know she was admitted long before we ever filled out that form.

This is a state university and our state has a strict quota for OOS students. It is much harder to get in as an OOS and they consider them separately.

We are clearly instate also. Her transcript was for a large public in state high school. In state address, driver’s liscense etc. I think it is much more a matter being stuck in computer limbo as being incomplete. No human ever looked at it probably. She’s called the admissions office and asked now. There’s nothing more we can do. Hopefully it will be a learning experience.

Lessons learned. She doesn’t get her decision early but is still eligible for admission. If her credentials had been evaluated with the early group she may have been deferred to the regular one. If she would have been a clear admit she’ll get in. At least she didn’t miss the application deadline! Don’t worry.

@multiplemom Would this be a UNC-CH app? I ask because they released on Friday and have a strict OOO quota. If it is, I would say all hope is NOT lost. I would let her sweat it out so that she can get the full benefit of the lesson to be learned here but our college counselor told us we did not need to worry about filling out all of the in-state information and/ or doing so accurately. If it is UNC, that app had a lot of questions to verify residency. You would think the HS transcript from a NC school would suffice. If it’s not UNC, it sounds like all hope is not lost from the call your daughter made. Good luck to her.

No it was not UNC although she is trying my patience with that one as well. It was NC State. All NC schools follow the quota. It’s just a bigger issue at UNC with its rankings. And she did not find out about the incomplete until after State’s RD deadline.

She applied to UNC too. She doesn’t know yet because she is on a youth group trip and hasn’t checked because she forgot her Connect Carolina Passport!!! I will be Old before this year is over!!! We are pretty sure UNC’s application was complete. I also suspect she isn’t trying to retrieve the password and find out due to social issues. One friend on this trip that applied was not accepted. It may be she doesn’t want to talk about it with this peer group.
I on the other hand am dying. All I could do not to call or text her to ask her to check. Very anxious for her to return home.

Follow up: She did receive an acceptance to State (the school with the incomplete application)!!
Very happy! And she was also accepted to UNC.

I have made her show me emails stating application is complete of the two remaining universities she has applied to.

Once crisis solved. Time for the next one.
Thank you for all your help.

=D>

Congratulations.
D2 also missed a law school’s merit award last year because it went to her spam folder. Our kids learn a lot from these applications.

Whew!

Yay, congrats OP! So glad the mom worry can cease for the moment.

Congrats! Here’s the reverse: when my student applied to Brown, her app read complete, and it was! They however didn’t even know she applied, although we had credit card statements and College Board confirmations etc that everything was sent. Two weeks after notices went out, and after much calling by studnet and parent, they came back with a no. They didn’t even know she had applied!

@multiplemom Congratulations on your daughter’s acceptances! Good luck with the remaining apps.
