Is this normal or should I go home?

I’m from Utah, and this time last year I wanted to go to UT Austin, major in philosophy, and be a lawyer. I visited UT and fell in love and knew it was the place for me, my dreams were smashed when I was denied in April. But there were two other schools in Texas I wanted to try UNT and St. Edwards University, I was accepted into both and got good aid at seu. My financial aid at UNT was put on hold due to a (fixable) problem with my fafsa.

My mom flat out told me no on UNT and I was sad but knew I had no family there like I do in Austin. I met someone back home and discussed all this with him and he asked me to stay in Utah because he loved me so when I went to visit seu that was on my mind the whole time.

I wasn’t really in love with the school when I visited and was all set to deny admission but that day I got a call from them saying they loved my application and please come because they thought I would be a great addition to the school. I told the lady I just wasn’t interested but she insisted I come here.

I went back and told this guy I accepted and he was crushed but I knew it just wouldn’t work between us.

I did an internship at a law office over the summer and absolutely hated it and now I really don’t want to be a lawyer. I’ve been thinking about becoming a teacher but I still want to major in philosophy.

I hate st. Edwards, no one will even talk to me, granted I started school yesterday I feel like a loser. I get the feeling my roommates don’t like me… I’ve always had a difficult time making friends because I’m a very nervous person. I just want to go home even though I’m not very fond of Utah and my friends are very unmotivated and are sort of deadbeats and my family is always very mean to me… I just don’t think I belong here…

Utah state university has one of the best education programs in the country and that is very attractive to me, they are also very cheap. But I don’t want people to think I’m going home because I’m not able to do this and I’m ready for a change in my life… What should I do?

Is it normal to feel this way when you first get to college or am I in the minority?

Is it normal? Half the threads on here when school starts up are people freaking out because it’s the first day and they don’t have a best friend yet.

Give it a chance. Stay for at least a semester. Go out and meet people, even if you’re shy or anxious around people. Smile, say hello, and realize that a lot of other students are in your same situation… they’re new, all alone, and would love to make friends.

Either way, two days is far too few to decide you hate your school. Ask your new roommates to go out and do something with you, or go down the hall at your dorm and stop by any open doors and introduce yourself. If that doesn’t help, find a club that interests you, and try going there.

Also, you should never ever base big decisions like education or majors or whatever around a high school boyfriend/girlfriend… I mean, you could try for long distance (skype, visit once in a while), but it’s college. I know this is a rather negative point of view to take, but a lot of relationships don’t last through college… that’s not to say yours can’t last, but it’s silly to choose a school based on someone else for when all you know, you could break up after half a semester. And if that did happen, you’d be stuck at that school for years because of it. Pick a school based on what you want, or what’s best for you. (Granted, you don’t seem thrilled with your choice so far, but no matter where you go you’ll be surrounded by strangers and have to make friends.)
