I am applying for UIUC in hopes of attending the college of engineering for computer science. Anyways, what is the lowest ACT score you have heard of that has got accepted into the college of engineering? Also, I am African American which should help out a little bit. I know this may sound crazy but I got a 25 on the ACT. Unfortunately, my grades in 9th grade were not good but I managed to realize my potential and college goal so I rapidly increased my grade point average. I believe I am 14/37 in my high school class. (218 in our entire high school which is 7-12 grade)! For my sub-score in math and science, I achieved a 27 in Science and 26 in math. Normally, applicants might not even try spending money to submit an application to UIUC with ACT scores like me, but I heard that the only way to have no chance of getting in is by not applying. After, hearing that advice, should I still give it a try? Maybe I’ll make history if I get in. HAHA! The middle 50% of students that got accepted into the college of engineering had an ACT score of 31-34 and they ranked 91-98% in their high school class. In UIUC’s admissions requirements, there is no ACT/SAT minimum so I am challenging this college to see if what they say really is true.

No, but I do make iPhone/iPad apps, invest heavily in the stock market using money from my job at Wendy’s (today is actually my one year anniversary), have my own photography business (heathpics.com), and some more cool stuff that I really enjoy doing. Also, i have included this into my essay which should really impress readers.

Apply. You will never know until you do. Everyone is different in terms of how well they do on standardized tests. But I can tell you that my daughter upped her composite from 26 to 30 by pouring through practice tests. Also, some people benefit from private tutors, but they are expensive. Retake the ACT.

Here’s the thing. They want to see competence in math coming into the program, because math is core to everything else in your studies. It’s not the only thing, but it is absolutely integral to almost every other course in the degree. This is a top engineering school. One of the best in the country. If you do get in, they’re not going to cut you any slack, but there always is help available from a variety of sources, if you need it. It sounds like you’ve got great ECs, and an upward trend in your courses. You may be given an alternate offer in DGS, be allowed to take the same courses that directly admitted engineering students can take, and prove to them that they should have admitted you in the first place. That may be your most likely way to earn admittance to the program.

If you don’t succeed at getting into UIUC Engineering, there are many other good engineering schools in the USA. Good luck.

I wish you the best of luck. I do want to caution you about giving so much personal info on a website like this. Best to not make it so easy to track you in real life.

You sound like a wonderful candidate and I am sure you will land somewhere great!

“Also, I am African American which should help out a little bit”
Don’t consider your race into admissions. Get where you want to be on your own merit.

I’d advise to search out all of the free tutoring the University offers, especially for math and physics so that you can get your GPA up as high as possible. You usually have to do better than the kids that are already in the program to transfer in as there are also CC students that will be competing for the spots who will have an easier time getting the A’s needed. Being African American or female will help you a little. Most engineering students are male Caucasian or Asian and UIUC actively seeks diversity but you have to be within “striking range.”
