I’m not going to lie, I know a lot about computers.

But to me (hopefully im not alone) this section of the forums is truly agonizing to read.

Google is you friend everyone.

Google is you friend everyone.

Yes… very much so.

My favorite thread topic I’ve seen so far was the “Do Macs really have NO viruses at all?”

/sarcasm

Really? Not even one??!

It’ll kill you if you ever get a job in tech, and no matter how carefully and precisely you document things, people will still expect you to do everything for them.

sorry people don’t want to have to read a bunch of stuff when it comes to computers.

the stereotypical tech support whining about how stupid their users are is hilarious–if it weren’t for those users, the tech support guys wouldn’t have jobs . . .

Users are actually usually fairly bright and competent they just expect everything to be handed to them, to the point of interrupting real work. Sometimes “tech support” is only a part of your job description, especially at smaller companies.

In the context of this forum, people are asking google-able questions. So they’re still reading about computers but not bothering to find the info at all.

tech support guys get software handed to them. if a piece of software/hardware they support doesn’t work, they aren’t going to fix it themselves–they are going to ask a developer/engineer to fix the bug. it’s hella hypocritical for tech support guys to be such snobs about computers when they really don’t understand how they work.

real work? if you are in tech support, that is your work.

Not really. I am (or at least, was until recently when I got much more involved with my photography) a big techie who’s done everything from OCing to DIY case mods, and I don’t find anything agonizing on these forums. The questions are a bit simplistic sometimes, but they’re from people who genuinely don’t know, and you can’t expect everyone to know everything about PCs, can you? :P

As long as the answers are serious and people aren’t spewing untrue, fanboy-driven answers, I don’t mind helping out on this forum.

The only thing that bothers me is when people forget that advice to college students is the point, not arguing their personal opinion about file systems and the like as if this were slashdot.

Sometimes though the two are related. If I think that something is unnecessary/unneeded/waste of money/there exists a better alternative, I’ll let them know.

As a very geeky person myself, I’d have to say - no, it’s actually not that bad. People come here truly looking for advice, and as long as they’re not complete *******s, I’ll provide that.

One has to understand that not everyone is as experienced in a subject as you are, that everyone has to be a newbie at some point, and that different people have different talents. Those who fail to understand that and get agonized are going to find life to be very difficult.
