Hi everyone.
A few years ago I started an account on freerice.com and now I have donated over 13 million grains of rice. It’s taken me years and many many hours, but 13 million is pretty great amount. I’m just not sure if this is something that college admissions people will care about or look in to? Should I put this on my apps? Thanks!
That is a very good question. My personal opinion, after a bit of reflection is that you should not. I like that is it something that piques interest and that you are caring about the cause… But If you think about it, you are just revealing that you spend hours on the internet clicking away when you could be doing something in your school and community that lead to personal growth and leadership. Add to that that, doing this activity is similar to studying for the SAT, and one would never put down hours for sat prep.
However I think this is something that you could slip into an essay and it would be a better use of showing what you care about while telling about something interesting. But no one knows how much 13 grains of rice is, that is sort of ridic. Thanks for reminding me of this website, I had forgotten.
Maybe we can put this in perspective. There are about a million grains of rice in a 20 kg bag, which is roughly 50 lbs for the metrically challenged.
So, your donation is about 13 bags of rice or a quarter tonne. Since market rice is running USD250-USD400 per metric ton, your donation has the value of about USD75-USD100.
How many hours did you spend to earn that?
That’s a short day of lawn mowing around here.
That might not be the best thing to admit to an admissions office.
