I want to write about how my family came to America for opportunities, but never took any. This shaped me because it gave me iniative and drive to want to help people, like my family, live the best lives possible. This is truly what I feel passionate about, but is everyone writing about something like this? It is unique?
Yes, many students with parents who were immigrants write stories about their experience in America in a similar way, either about this or about the struggles of learning a new language. You don’t have to pick a new topic necessarily, but it would be good to find a unique way to write about such a common theme.
Yeah this is a pretty common essay topic, but if you feel passionate about it then you should definitely write about it. I think it could be more unique if you based your essay on how your family never took opportunities and that is what caused you to have iniative and drive, but then focus most of your essay on what you have done with that mentality. Have you started a club or some sort of business? See, that would impress admissions officers. That would show that despite what others are doing around you and what the “norm” is, you went your own way and did something great no matter what the odds were. To a certain extent it doesn’t matter what you write about as long as you feel passionate about it and can make it unique and specific to you. That being said if you truly can’t find a way to make this essay different from all the others that are similar, then maybe it would be a good idea for you to pick a more obscure essay topic to set yourself apart.
Hope this helped you!
I believe that every story is unique. Although, there might be a lot of essays about experiences of immigrant families in US, what you and your family experienced when you came to US is a completely different story. And since you have mentioned that you are passionate about this topic, I would suggest you go ahead with your essay. The fact that you can personalize the essay by sharing your true experiences, will make the essay a compelling read. I actually think that the story of an immigrant family that did NOT take advantage of opportunities is a fresh angle. If you add highly specific details about your family and yourself, and make clear your feeling, you could have a great essay. Just be sure to connect your drive to something that sounds like any high school student. In other words, do not allow people to stereotype you.
