I am wondering how much aid accepted OOS students and in-state students received from Penn State. I compared my aid and how much loan I would need to borrow compared to my friends’ and it seems they are only borrowing 10k/year. I thought it would be easier to make a new thread to gather more info about cost of attendance for in-state and out-of-state students going to Penn State. I am an OOS student and barely received any aid. After doing the math, it looks like I need to borrow approximately $20,000/year. Are other students having the same problem as me?

I really want to attend Penn State b/c it is a great school but I’m not sure if other students also received very little aid. It is hard to convince myself to borrow so much loan considering that I’m likely to attend dental school in the future.

What route do you suggest I take to be in less debt?

Do you think CUNYs are still great schools to attend and will prepare me for dental school?

I don’t really like the fact that CUNYs have less clubs and activities which dental school like to see but b/c it’s less expensive, I might have to consider it. In addition to the questions I asked above, please tell me your cost of attendance and how much loan you’re borrowing.

I already paid Penn State $300 for enrollment fee just to secure my housing but I am still afraid of how much loan I will have to borrow.

Penn State is very stingy on financial aid especially if you are an oos applicant. I was accepted last year and received nothing at all luckily I had visited before receiving financial aid and was not very fond of it. Since you want to attend dental school I would advise that you avoid the 80 thousand dollars in debt at all costs. Look at Hunter and Baruch and as long as you do well there I dont see why you would not have a good chance at dental school. Where else did you get accepted into?

Which school did you decide to attend and what grade are you? Were you also an OOS applicant?

I applied to Hunter but I STILL haven’t heard from them! I got rejected from SUNYs unfortunately and don’t like the privates I got accepted into so CUNYs are the only and cheapest solution. I got into City College and Brooklyn College. And isn’t Baruch only good for business? I want to major in Biology/Pre-Dental.

imho, that’s waaay too much debt for anyone, let alone someone who is considering grad school later. What if you change your mind? What if it takes you 5+ years to graduate from PSU because you have to stop and work to pay your way? And what if you have to take on MORE debt because tuition rises, living expenses, etc? If you have a more cost-effective choice, you need to seriously get over the PSU glamour factor and think about how your life is affected by having 6 figures of debt when you start a dental career.
