(My just for the hell of it colleges, not even sure if i will seriously apply)
Stanford
John Hopkins
University of Chicago

My career goal is within medicine.
Majoring in some sort of Biological science.

Stats:

Somewhat Rigorous Course load.
Several APs and Honors taken.
3.84 UC GPA
3.79 Weighted GPA
Competitive school, small private.
Financial aid may or may not be necessary. My dad’s sector is being outsourced, which is ironic because he is Indian and most of his co-worker’s fall under the other ethnicities that are relative to outsourcing, to Malaysia in October. He is good at what he does, but its not definite that he can get a job.

Hospital volunteering
Local Library Volunteering
founding of medicine club
President of Math club probably as well senior year
Link Crew
Soccer for all years except junior
Possibly Cross Country for Senior year
Job at the family UPS Store.
Bass for around 3 years. Viola for around 1 year.

Pushes i know but im good at busting my ass off on these things.

Not reporting AP scores. Not good enough for reporting. Plus I only had 2 AP courses in the soph/junior time frame. Several in the Senior frame though.

I have several very qualified family members reviewing my admissions essays.

I have several great people willing to give me superb recommendations.

Should I toss out any colleges from my list to save money? Should I add any colleges? Should I add the other UC’s to the list?

If you can bring your SAT up to 1850, you have a good chance here (as well as at Davis)

UCs don’t look at recommendation letters (at least not last year)
If you do succeed in getting the SAT up to >2000 - 2100 in Oct, UCSD might look possible. (Try to get the UC GPA up a bit first semester senior year, UCSD average GPA 2008 was 4.07.) UCSD also has the point system you could look into, to see if you are eligible to add points in various categories such as low income, single parent family etc)

You look good for UCSC, and UCR/UCM look like safeties.

What do you mean, no good? The first semester senior courses? The UCs will look at the couse load you are taking for senior year. (Course load does have an effect on admissions as UCs, especially the more selective ones, take the rigourousness of your course choices into account, in the context of your high school). Both “in progess” (1st semester) and “planned” (2nd semester) will be included on your app. Eventually, the school you accept to attend (once you’ve been admitted) will require your official transcript for senior year grades.

I know about that last part. I am just talking about the general admissions process of it. But nothing beyond the course rigor and the school profile of those classes are being taking account.

And the no good im talking about is in the appeals process. Hell if i could use my senior grades as part of my appeals i would definitely use them. But i dont know what to believe about that process anymore

Oh, and for most of the privates, you will be required to send an official transcript of your first semester grades once you get those. There are forms for specific for that.

Well, say you were denied from a UC you really want to attend and if you were borderline for example, an appeal would need to show info that wasn’t apparent in the original application. If you had super grades senior year that would increase your GPA substantially, if you received a couple of great awards, etc. the UC could take that into account and reconsider you for admission.

@sequoia
no way. F**k yea! I was planning to get a perfect GPA my 1st senior semester so i could fall under the highest category for graduation. And as well getting some awards so i could look like a better candidate for scholarships. You have given me hope for college. Even if everyone says there is a small rate of appeals, it still means people get in, and some chance is better then no chance. You have really helped me.

@fangsup15
Yea that is what I was thinking too.

rararachit: It’s true that the success rate of appeals is low, but it does happen (I know of two students who were successful). If you are really confident about your grades when you submit your app end November, you could consider writing something about your progress and upward trend in the “additional info” box, and IF there was a valid reason why you may have had some low grades in 10th/11th here is the place to explain that (without coming across as an excuse though). Do your best with the SAT in Oct. If I were you, I’d not redo that SATII USH (good enough), but concentrate on Math 2 for Nov. UCs only count the two best. Also, write really good essays.
Best of luck.

thanks sequoia. My first semster sophomore year was a bit rough because my grandpa literally died the week before school started and it was kinda hard just dealing with his death, he was basically my roommate since i was 5 or 6. I dont know how valid that is but its true.
Alright i will take out the USH of the equation. I just want to have a high bio score with my math2 score just to show my will to pursue my career is strong.

Indian people become irrational when it comes to getting into good colleges.
