Is this too much of a "reach" school for my daughter?

She has an A avg all four years transcript w/ aps (5)and honors.

Sat will range 1300-1400 after a fall retake with a high writing score that I hear schools are not considering much but are “looking at it anyway”.

Sat2 US HISTORY and will take SAT2 LIT in fall(expect 750+)

From a Catholic prep school on Long Island.

Not many EC’s…approx 100+ hrs community work and tutoring.

Loves art and photography ( ART school for 2yrs.) this takes up most of her spare time and writing. But no awards…good reccomendations from teacher however.

She should have good recs and essay and perhaps could send portfolio of photos and artwork if UND would be interested( but she is NOT applying to Art Dept as Art Major. Should she send portfolio anyway to give stregth to her application since she does not have many EC’s?)

Well. What do you think? The school looks like a wonderful place for her to learn and live…but would she be a good applicant? Or need a stronger application?

Dear luliztee

I think that ND may be a “reach” school in a technical sense, but not totally out of her grasp. The middle 50% SAT is 1330 to 1470, so a score of 1300 to 1400 as you’re forecasting would likely fall in the bottom of range. You don’t indicate a class rank, which is important at ND. Strength of schedule is important too, and if she has 5 APs by the end of junior year that’s a pretty strong curriculum.

As far as her arts/photo portfolio, the ND application does indicate that you can include slides of work with an application to support that interest, and doesn’t limit that to prospective arts majors. You might want to contact the admissions advisor for your region (you’ll find the name at the admissions site at nd.edu) to see how useful that is for a non-arts major. There’s also a transcript of a past “chat” session in the admissions site that might be interesting to you.

ND is a unique place and it sounds like your daughter would get a lot out of it, so don’t hestitate to apply just because it’s not a sure thing. Good luck!

How important is class rank in the admissions process at ND. For example, supoose a student is top 15% of their class with SAT/ACT scores in the top 25% for ND and a large number of AP classes. How will these be viewed by ND.
