Is this unwise to do?

So, I’m applying to Stern for Marketing. On my common app, my short answer and famous New Yorker personal statement are relating to theatre. I like theatre a lot, but I’m also very good at and interested business, math, and science and I don’t feel like I’m showing that very much of that outside of the area of interest personal statement and my grades, EC’s, leadership, etc.

Specifically, my common app short answer is about a theatre program I do, and my New Yorker personal statement is about Lloyd Richards.

Should I cut back on the theatre talk?
I don’t want them to think I should be applying to Tisch instead.

i applied to steinhardt and got in and maybe im just really self-conscious but i felt like my app was all over the place. my new yorker was a food critic, my essay was really family personal, my haiku was perhaps i am not/creative enough for this/university, my stuff that i did beside work during the summer is how i couldnt sleep.

so i was really surprised and happy and felt so lucky when i got in.

but then again, im steinhardt, so i have no idea how stern works, not that i knew much of steinhardt either or how apps work in general.

best of luck

Lol. I was going to spend that day with Bobby Flay, but I chose Lloyd Richards instead.

My answers for the supplement were all over the place too. My poem was a haiku about being Hindu, being a vegetarian, and loving animals; my movie was about being a doctor and saving the world from a pandemic that threatens to destroy mankind (since I wanna become a doctor and I applied for the pre-med program thingy); my famous New Yorker was Lady Gaga; and stuff I did over the summer was volunteer at my local library and taking drivers ed. I was sure that my supplement was a complete disaster and it would cause me to be rejected, but I got accepted to CAS so… I guess it was good :)

i think it’s AWESOME your supplements are about theatre! my common app essay, 150-word answer, new yorker (jack kelly from newsies), and something else ALL were theatre, and i’m a bio major. i think it helps show that you’re unique, not just some robotic businessman wannabe. good luck!

also, @guess29218 - VEGETARIANS FTW!

I haven’t gotten in… and I am still waiting for my decision

but I wrote about Walt Whitman as my New Yorker
and my poem was about believing in the good in people and how i prefer pen and paper as opposed to online communication
and my movie was set in the 1920s because i took an abstract view of my life and became my alter ego
and i spent the summer working 60 hours a week…

Idk if this helps, but good luck!

Not that I know anything about what the admissions office is looking for, but I’d argue that the supplements about theater shows another side of you beyond the rest of your application.

Anyone willing to let me read their poem?
I won’t steal, of course. I need a little something to spark something poetic.
