Is U of C military friendly

I am a Veteran who is looking to transfer. 4.0 out of CC college with a 34 ACT. How would the U of C climate be for former military, I am very conservative in my views.

It depends first on what you mean by conservative, and second on how tolerant you are of others’ views. There is no doubt that UofC is a very liberal school. As someone from a conservative community, I know that people are appalled at the fact that the dorms and bathrooms are mixed-sex (women and men can even be roommates), for example. But even beyond the university itself being very liberal, the student body is largely liberally minded, but more so in a socially liberal way than an economically liberal way. While people will certainly be interested in debating you and hearing what you have to say, however, I believe that they will respect your views (this has been my experience, however I am only on the more conservative side of liberal). Without more information about what exactly you mean, this is the most I can say.

As far as veterans go, i know a handful here and they don’t seem to be getting anything for it. To qualify, the guys I know don’t really carry ‘veteran’ as part of their identity, and they’re mostly Singaporean, so your mileage may vary.

Thanks, my concern is being in an environment of closed minded liberals. I am very open and respectful to hearing any argument or side but expect the same respect. I don’t identify myself openly as a Veteran but it has shaped who I am and many of my beliefs. My world was very small prior to my service. I am looking to make my world larger again, and I was thinking U of C would be a step in that direction.

One way in which U of C is VERY military friendly is in their participation in the post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon program. Not to go into all of the details, but eleigible veterans and family members can use the post-9/11 GI bill benefits to pay for ALL of U of C tuition. Every penny (plus a living expenses stipend). They (UC) also expanded the program this year to support an unlimited number of students on the Yellow Ribbon program.

I don’t know about you, but I could handle a little bit of left wing bias as the cost of attending a top-tier school for next to nothing. Besides, if U of C really is left of center, some leavening with students with real world experience would be good for it.
