Is UCLA realistic?

I am a junior right now and reside in California. I was born in Somalia i have a lot of siblings, a part-time job, my family’s income is well below 30k, and I’m the second oldest of a first-generation family. My WGPA is 4.2(weak i know), taking 4 APs(intending to take 6 next year), 1 honors and some electives. ECs include School Board Rep, Key club Division Task Coordinator, Model United Nations Under Director General. I’m also the SADD VP, ASB(student gov) Treasurer elect , Link Crew Leader, and Red Cross Historian. I got a 5 on the AP World Test last year. I played basketball last year if it matters. I have accumulated a 100-200+ hours of community service and intend to get more. I haven’t taken the SAT yet but I expect something in the 1900-2100 region. what are my chances with UCLA? I’m not sure if my background can carry the burden of my weak gpa

I would focus on the following points in order to strengthen your application:

Study well and get good SAT scores! This is probably the least unique piece of advice for a college application, but it’s true. While an extremely high score will not guarantee admittance, it does weigh heavily into the equation. The same goes for low scorers. Though a bad score won’t immediately disqualify you, it will seriously mitigate your chances.

This one mainly regards college essays and/or interviews. I would emphasize your story about being born in Somalia, how you came to the US, etc. Admissions officers are always looking for a unique person and love a good storyteller more than anything else. Seriously, it’s all about making your application seem interesting and different.

Overall, I’d say that if you can convincingly show that you are a diverse, well-rounded applicant with a unique story and good grades, then you can get in to the majority of colleges. Good luck!
