The projected tuition is around 46k and ~13k for room and board. I know that I really loved this school, but I’m not sure if it’s worth all of this money just for undergrad.

Harvard’s tuition, room and board is about $58,000. Is the University of Rochester then slightly better than Harvard? Honestly, that depends on what you want and how you feel about it. It’s definitely a great school in terms of both academics and prestige. Would I recommend spending that much on it? Personally, it’s not for me but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. I’ll note that the actual tuition and room and board fees aren’t necessarily tied to the actual quality of the school; at a certain level, many if not most private colleges have close to the same sticker price (somewhere between $50,000 and $70,000 a year), and these costs are driven by a lot of factors that you probably wouldn’t even care about as a student – yield management, financial aid costs, operating costs, future expansions, etc. Even a really crappy school has some of these issues so it’s hard to really gauge whether or not a given school is ‘worth it’ just looking at the cost.

(That’s not even taking into account any scholarship opportunities that might be available; sometimes these schools set their tuition sky high so that they can offer you a $20,000 grant and look generous).

As for if it’s worth it for you, personally, that depends too – can you pay all of this out of pocket or will you have to borrow? What do you want to go to college for? If you want to become a doctor or a lawyer, then you want to get through undergrad as cheaply as possible because professional schools and graduate programs will ream you.
