UT says they started using all 3 scores for the class of 2009. I think individual schools vary, though. I think Engineering still uses only Math/CR

Youdon’tsay, why would you say that? If you are instate it’s all about the top 10%, right?

Do you think a non-top10% kid can get in with just a high SAT score? I’m not very well informed on this, but have been told there’s almost no chance.

The top 10% instate will get you into UT. That alone won’t get you into engineering. Their primary emphasis for admittance to engineering is class rank and SAT/ACT scores. The other stuff does not seem to matter much.

As far as a non-10% student chances for getting in to engineering, it depends on how high the class rank and how high the test scores.

Ds isn’t interested in engineering. I only wrote that because his writing score from the June 6 SAT (we just got the scores this a.m.) was a 780 so if it’s used in the decision-making, then a 780 will work in his favor.

No, he’s not in top 10%, so he needs the help his strong SAT scores can give him. But, yeah, I think he has a decent shot at getting in. Many kids from his HS outside the top 10% get in.

Duh! Where’s my V-8! It’s because of the new Top 10% changes which includes the 1500/2400 stipulation.

There’s so many changes - no summer fish, sig classes, Math I thrown out and the ALEKS or whatever at the last minute (after everyone just took the Math I)

Someone said a couple weeks ago the Natural Science Dept. suddently decided on the ALEKS instead of the Math I. I’m thinking the Sci Dept is cutting expenses and trying out a new program involving this ALEKS thing. I haven’t heard any other depts going to that program but they might if UT likes it. Of course it might not go over at all and be dumped after a year or so.

Granted, the ruling changes don’t go in effect until fall 2011 but it looks like UT started the SAT 2400 score immediately:

“Use of scores in admission decisions (Summer/Fall 2009 and beyond) read more
The Office of Admissions will begin using SAT/ACT writing scores when making admission decisions beginning with applicants to Summer/Fall 2009. UT Austin will use your ACT/SAT score, including your writing score, from a single test date as one of the items that make up your academic achievement.”

And what bealonghorn has to say on the matter:

"The Office of Admissions will begin using SAT/ACT writing scores when making admission decisions beginning with applicants to Summer/Fall 2009. UT Austin will use your ACT/SAT score, including your writing score, from a single test date as one of the items that make up your academic achievement. "

But I have been unable to find any research on the utexas website which shows a new formula that reflects this change, and have seen data published since the change that would make it seem like they didn’t change at all.

“Many kids from his HS outside the top 10% get in.”

Sorry to harp on this, but is that info recent?

My son goes to an excellent HS and has taken AP everything except English. We haven’t gotten the rankings, but his gpa is around 4.97/6 or 3.3/4. His ACT was 32 and SAT is 1980/2400. He will most likely be around 15%.

My understanding is that no way these numbers could get him into UT and he’s not inclined to CAP, so he isn’t even planning to apply.

What kinds of statistics DID the kids that you know have?

i have seen some kids get in outside of the top 10, but i think it is that they were in oddball (not that popular) majors or something.

i suppose you could apply, but i wouldn’t get hopes up.

my dd has higher GPA than your son and a little lower test scores. those grades place her at 17 - 19%. she will not CAP and will not be applying to UT.
