I’ve never heard that term before. But yeah, it’s a commuter campus. Most people don’t live on campus. The dorms don’t have capacity. Lots of the UW’s housing stuff is actually in the next neighborhood away (quick bus ride) but mass transit is so easy that it’s not really that big of an issue. The UW is in a metropolitan part of town, so there’s plenty of places that are nearby that you can walk to campus or bus quickly.

These statistics are from the Dept. of Education:

Number of Students 32688
Number of Part-Time Students 6987
Number of Graduate Students 7750
Dorm Capacity 5895

So, while I still don’t understand the term “suitcase school” and wouldn’t use it, since the enrollment exceeds the dorm capacity by over 26,000, it is definitely a commuter campus.
