Hello, Is UWASHINGTON considered a target schools to become an investment banker? Do companies take it seriously and recruit on campus?

UWASH. Hahahahaha.

UWashington is a great school and I’ve heard that companies in the city do recruit.

…as long as you don’t call it UWASH…

For New York…no. For west coast offices, barely (kids from Stanford, USC, and Berkeley get priority). Can you break in? Yes.

You have to do all of the networking and calling to get a shot but competition is stiff.

AvgAsian: where’s your proof to show other schools’ graduates get priority? I don’t believe what you’re saying is true at all.

A graduate from UW seeking an investment banking position is highly sought after by employers, not only in Washington State but all over. For instance, I’ve read many recent bachelor-level profiles on Applied and Computational Math majors from UW. Just look at this list, many went on to do financially-related careers:

http://www.math.washington.edu/Undergrad/Alumni/departments.html

Aside from financial and insurance careers, many went on to be software developers at Amazon and Microsoft, others went on to do government jobs in Maryland. From Washington Mutual to Children of the Nations International in Africa to UW itself, many of these graduates found work all over the place. Yes, even applied math majors become investors!

Don’t think you’re lucking out attending UW, you’re going to one of the most respected research institutions in the world. :)

Assuming that you’re going into I-Banking for the money, then your employment objective is to land a job in west coast offices in SF or east coast in NYC or Chicago. I am also assuming that you are aiming for a Middle Market (Wachovia, Wells Fargo etc) or Bulge Bracket bank (Goldman, UBS, Credit Suisse etc). If these are your criteria, then no, UW is not a banking target.

I don’t literally mean “priority” for employment, but the first stop for west coast recruitment is the UC Berkeley Haas School (where ~90% of graduates stay in the west), Stanford, USC, and probably UCLA. UW gets regional respect, but competition is stiff for jobs outside.

I would like to affirm that the school is NOT a TARGET because it simply doesn’t feed into these top tier positions. I would also like to state that it is still quite possible to break into the field in spite of this fact, as many kids from non-feeder unis/colleges break into I-Banking every year.

@XRaptor: yes, I can respect the employment profile of the school as a whole. But the OP is interested in investment banking, which none of the alumni in that list are working in.

AvgAsian: Yeah, I should have read the OP’s topic more closely, sorry.

Yes; companies do come on campus to deal internships with students. I was passing through Mary Gates Hall once and I saw several banks including Bank of America and there were lots of interviews going on.

For investment banking? No. Very likely for private wealth management and financial analyst (i.e. accounting) positions.

[University of Washington: Undergraduate Profile ? BusinessWeek](<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?)

Of course that isn’t a full representation of employment, but the salaries AND recruiting mode companies suggest that there is very little to no investment banking placement. UW is great regionally, but it is not even close to a feeder to bulge bracket or even middle market IB positions.

Top schools for iBanking for west coast jobs: Stanford, Berkeley (preferably Haas), Pomona, Claremont McKenna, USC (preferably Marshall), Santa Clara University, UCLA, and any elite school from the midwest/east coast.

Some majors may be… I guess. There are some big corps. in Seattle after all, like MS, Boeing, Starbucks… I think they should have some special care for UW grads.

Why did you bring back such a dead thread…?

I was searching for some info about target schools lol
