Is Work Study getting eliminated?

I heard that Work study is going to be eliminated for spring semester, and i wanted to know if that is true or not? I am a work study student at Washington State University, and i am worried about losing work study next year. does anyone have any idea if this is false or not?

Where did you “hear” that??? A link please?

i heard it around campus, and a couple people i have talked to have told me that it is going to be cut. I am not sure if it is just at my university or if it is everywhere? but that is my question. I want to know if it is a rumor or not

http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kplu/news.newsmain/article/0/1/1639240/KPLU.Local.News/Work.Study.Cuts.Hit.Students.And.Businesses

Is this some kind of state work study program? I thought work study was federal. Or is there both?

from what i have read it seems like theya re cutting it by $7million. It is federal i am pretty sure. However i don’t know if this means that it will just be harder for kids to get money from the program, or if it means that some kids will get some, if not all, of their work study earning taken away??

The article says that the **state **legislature is cutting something…that wouldn’t be federal. State legislatures have no control over federal spending/cutting.

Many federal programs are supported by matching funds from states, such as Medicaid. And also some states have similar work-study programs modeled after federal programs to supplement the federal WS awards, backed by state dollars.

Federal work study has not been eliminated. It is still in the budget at the same amounts (no increase or decrease). Washington state may have their own program that is being cut, but it is not federal WS.

ACG and SMART grants will be gone for 2011-2012.

Work study is a federally funded program. It is not state supported. There may be some states that have a similar type of program for students…but federal work study is NOT funded by state monies.

Our state used to give us a limited pot of work study funding to award. They stopped that this past year due to budget cuts. Federal work study is still hanging around …

'The reason they can do this is because the Federal tax base is much higher than average, allowing these aid programs from the federal government remain solvent and helpful to lower-income families even though similar state programs get cut unfortunatley due to delcining tax revenue because of the economic recession. It happens at lower levels of education too, such as high schools supported by property taxes losing revenue because of foreclosures reducing # of people playing Property Taxes.

Post #11 receives my “double talk” post of the day…full of political rhetoric, and not worded in a particularly helpful manner for those who are questioning whether WS has been eliminated or not.

Okay, fine then. Mislead people all you want. All I want people to understand is that there is a difference between federal and state financial aid programs, and federal programs are altogether more trustworthy and reliable since the federal government has a large budget for its department of education and it is funded by mandatory appropriations (as of 2006) while state budget programs are reliant on something called a General Fund which is financed through a specific tax (usually property or “sin” taxes on things like cigarettes and alcohol).

There is nothing “political rhetoric” about it; it is simply a fact that you should be aware of and you should always check the website for a state program each year to make sure that whether or not the aid program (whether it is a state grant, work-study, or low-interest loan) is an entitelment and if it isn’t whether there are any priority deadlines tha tyou have to meet to guarantee that you get the aid before the funds run out. This is different from Pell grants, which typically do not “run out” and anyone who qualifies for it is allowed to accept it because the Federal DOE always makes sure that they appropriate enough money each year to fulfill the mandate.

This is hardly controversial information, and I’m surprised that you of all people can’t understand why this is something that students should take note of considering how many of them rely on some form of state aid in addition to personal finances and federal aid.

Bedouin…yes there is a difference between state and federal funding. There is a difference between federally funded aid and institutional aid. BUT this thread is about WORK STUDY and whether or not it has been eliminated.

Certainly, folks should be aware about the different kinds of aid and the sources of that aid. Why don’t you start a thread about that…so we can remain ON TOPIC with that…and with this thread about work study.

And I did NOT mislead anyone. Work Study is a FEDERALLY FUNDED need based financial aid award. FEDERAL work study is not beholden to state funds. Some states might have employment monies for college students but this is not Work Study.

I will try ONCE AGAIN.

The FEDERAL work study program is NOT the subject of this thread. The OP is talking about the recent statement that the STATE [work study program](http://www.hecb.wa.gov/financialaid/sws/swsindex.asp) offered by the STATE of WASHINGTON (and not the Federal Government in Washington D.C.) is being [cut by about 7 million dollars](http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kplu/news.newsmain/article/0/1/1639240/KPLU.Local.News/Work.Study.Cuts.Hit.Students.And.Businesses). The FEDERAL work study program, which I emphacized is funded by federal appropriations from the national budget, comes from a completely different source (as you noted) than the STATE work study program, and cuts to any state program related to college financial aid has no effect on that. There is nothing wrong with the federal program, BUT the state program (which is separate from the federal government’s aid program) now has less funding, which translates to less aid for needy families to afford college.

I’m sure you’re trying to help, but you seem to be misinterpreting what I’m saying. I am not talking about the federal work study program except to distinguish between it and the state program of Washington. Some posters well-meaningingly mistakenly conflated the two and I just wanted to qualify that the federal program is fine and the state program is the only one facing budget cuts.

Thumper didn’t confuse the two.

If you look at the OP’s first post, he doesn’t say anything about a state program being cut. It wasn’t until my post #4 that I found what might be what the OP was talking about.

If the OP has been receiving federal WS in his package, then he’ll likely continue receiving it. Has he clarified what is in hi FA package?
