Hello.
I have some birthdays coming up in Jan for my first year boarding school kids. What ideas do you have? Any tips/tricks? Would you connect with roommates? Advisors? House parents?
Thanks!
I’d talk to the advisor and see what other people do. Things I’ve seen on campus where sending flowers, cookies, etc, ordering pizza or wings for the dorm or having kid take their friends out to a restaurant.
Check first. Some schools automatically send out a big cake with every birthday, with lit candles and the birthday song, and a video recording etc. And then parents might supplement…
Wow! I’ve never heard of that.
I would email the dorm faculty and see if a birthday cake/cupcakes would work as a dorm feed. So there would be wider recognition of the birthday + a little celebration.
Our school had a link on its site for birthday celebrations. It had local establishments that could personalize and deliver on the right day. I think it was on the “Parent” page. You may find something like that if you look…
I would check in with your kids to see what they want…both of my kids prefer not being the center of attention, so while both of their schools suggest an advisory feed (ie cupcakes), neither wanted that. Especially since advisory groups are not necessarily aligned with friends groups. For kiddo1, I typically send Insomnia cookies, enough for her to share with her friends. Kiddo2 will either do nothing at all, or take his small group of friends out to dinner on our dime. I also usually send a care package to arrive on/near their birthday.
Depends on school location, but for one child we order from a nearby cupcake bakery that will deliver for fee. For the other kiddo in a more remote area a faculty member picked up a cake at a local grocery store for us. Our kids have gone to birthday lunches and dinners with friends whose parents are close enough for a day trip.
